Job description

Performs protective service and technical work in fire suppression and rescue operations; does related work as required. Work is often performed under emergency and/or hazardous conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under close supervision of the Fire Captain.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Responding to fire, rescue, and emergency medical service calls; performing fire suppression, emergency medical care and hazardous materials handling; maintaining station and equipment; participating in continuing training.Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating, and salvage work. Provides basic life support services; performs detailed subjective and objective patient assessments within established protocols, stabilization, and treatment; coordinates emergency care procedures with physician. Performs and participates in technical rescues including stabilizing, extrication, high angle, confined space, trench rescue, wilderness rescue, search and rescue, water and boat rescue and hazardous materials operations. Performs cleanup and overhaul work. Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, and cleaning fire station and grounds. Inspects, tests, and paints fire hydrants. Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes; assists with training when required. Conducts station tours and explains equipment to public. Installs smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operates specialized equipment, ATV's, boats, etc. Performs related tasks as required.

General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of fire prevention strategies and techniques; general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques, and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public; ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; possession of mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Must be at least 18 years of age and meet the physical requirements contained in NFPA 1581. Complete North Carolina Firefighter I and II certification requirements. Obtain North Carolina EMT certification. Complete ICS 100, 200 and 700 during probationary period. Obtain Emergency Vehicle Driver certification within one year.
