Job description

Job Summary

This is a non-exempt position reporting directly to a Shift Officer. Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, this position performs fire suppression duties and fire prevention activities. This position operates in a team environment and responds to and assists with a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations, including structure fires, automobile fires, wildland fires, and medical emergencies. Duties include performing pre-incident surveys, conducting daily inspections of vehicles and equipment, performing emergency equipment maintenance, and completing routine station maintenance duties, including sweeping, mopping, cutting grass, and laundry. This position works a rotating 48-hour shift with 96 hours off, or an 8-hour-per-day, 40-hour-per-week schedule.

Responsibilities

• Perform Fire Suppression: Maintain a state of constant readiness to respond to fire and medical emergencies through preparedness training, including physical training, education, and equipment maintenance. Perform emergency duties while operating within the Fire Department Incident Command System. Under supervision, perform activities necessary to ensure life safety, fire control, and property conservation, including fire attack and extinguishment, protection of evidence of fire cause, extricating victims from vehicles, and providing basic life support.
• Conduct Fire Prevention Activities: Conduct routine pre-incident surveys and fire prevention activities, assist with public fire safety education programs, and participate in training programs as needed or required by Fire Department policy in conjunction with the Fire Prevention division.
• Perform Station Maintenance and Equipment Inspection: Perform routine station maintenance duties, including sweeping, mopping, cutting grass, laundry, and other duties. Conduct and document thorough pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment daily, in accordance with department and state regulations, to ensure safety and operational readiness.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of

Terms of Employment

• The employee shall maintain physical fitness equal to the demands of structural firefighting, EMS emergencies, and training duties.
• The employee shall cultivate a positive attitude and work ethic while performing the duties of the position.
• Yearly performance evaluations will be conducted, and the employee shall meet the expectations of the position.
• All members of Steese Inc., whether volunteer or paid, are employed at will.
• The Fire Chief may dismiss membership at any time, for any reason, with or without notice. There are no contracts for membership for either paid or volunteer personnel.

There is no probationary period for volunteer or paid positions within the Steese Volunteer Fire Department.

Requirements

• Must be at least 19 years of age
• Minimum of one year of active experience as a Structural Firefighter
• Physically fit to perform fire ground duties/task performances to include entry into structure fires
• Department physical ability test must be passed prior to hiring and on an annual basis
• Valid Alaska Driver’s License with three (3) years of driving experience and insurable under SVFD’s vehicle insurance policy
• State of Alaska or IFSAC Firefighter I
• Current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
• Current AK-MICP license or current State of Alaska AK-AEMT certification
• (must obtain State of AK-AEMT certification & SVFD Lead Medic status within three (3) months of hire)
• IS-100, IS-700 certificates
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

• Associates degree in municipal fire control or related field
• Checked off on operation of other fire department apparatusIS-200, 300, 400, 800 certificate
