Job Description:


Oakton has an immediate need for qualified part-time Fire Science/Emergency Medical Technician Mentors to assist in the teaching of the EMT course. Emergency Medical Technician studies the duties performed by emergency medical technicians, following the National EMS Education Standards. Content includes CPR, human body anatomy, vital signs, ventilation, cardiac emergencies, resuscitation, automated external defibrillation, pharmacology, bleeding and shock, fractures, injuries, childbirth, lifting and moving of patients, legal and ethical issues. Practical skill performance is heavily emphasized throughout the course. This course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health and successful completion of the course qualifies students to take the EMT licensing examination or the National Registry Examination for EMT.


The main responsibilities of the Mentor are to provide individual guidance to the student in developing EMS psychomotor skills and applying cognitive knowledge in evaluating and managing EMS emergencies. The Mentor assembles equipment and sets up practical skill stations; practical skills equipment will be maintained, cleaned, and stored by the Mentor. On assigned testing days, the Mentor will evaluate students practical skills proficiencies. The Mentor will assist the primary and secondary instructors as needed.


Mentors are paid on an hourly basis at a rate of $21.76 per hour.



Requirements:


Current Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) license as a EMT-Basic or Paramedic, and a minimum of three years of experience as a licensed EMT-Basic are required.


Five years or more of experience as a licensed EMT-Basic or at least two years of experience as a licensed Paramedic; current IDPH Lead Instructor licensure and/or National Association of Emergency Medical Systems Educators (NAEMSE) Instructor, Part I certification; Fire Science Instructor I certification or transcript of completion of the Fire Science Instructor I course; BLS Instructor certification by the American Heart Association; and credentials to instruct in CPR are preferred.
