Job summary

Salary

The annual salary for this position ranges from $37,600 to $47,000. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Purpose of Position

Support the Environmental Health & Safety Office with the Fire and Life Safety programs and services. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for inspections, testing, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers and conducting no-flow (churn) tests on fire pumps to ensure they are in optimal working condition. Among other duties, this role ensures that all fire extinguishers and fire pumps are in proper working condition and comply with safety requirements in accordance with NFPA 10 and NFPA 25 standards.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct regular visual inspections of fire extinguishers to ensure they are properly located, accessible, and in good condition.
  • Perform monthly inspections and annual maintenance checks as required by NFPA 10 standards.
  • Coordinate recharges and replacement of fire extinguishers as necessary with an external vendor.
  • Coordinate 6- and 12-year inspections with an external vendor.
  • Provide recommendations for the placement and type of fire extinguishers based on the specific hazards present.
  • Perform monthly no-flow (churn) tests on fire pumps to verify proper operation under zero-flow conditions in accordance with NFPA 25 standards.
  • Inspect and test mechanical and electrical components of fire pumps to identify any issues such as vibrations, overheating, unusual noises, etc.
  • Measure and record the pressure generated by the pump during churn tests to ensure it meets the designed churn pressure.
  • Identify and report any deficiencies or malfunctions in fire pump systems timely.
  • Maintain accurate records of all inspections, tests, and maintenance activities in department software application.
  • Respond to fire alarms and assist with campus fire and life safety systems as directed during working hours to facilitate campus operations (i.e., fire alarm device disabling, etc.).
  • Support university events as directed (inspecting, monitoring, performing fire watch, etc.).
  • May be required to respond after-hours in support of business needs.
  • Stay up to date with NFPA 10 and NFPA 25 standards and other relevant fire safety regulations.
  • Assist with other Fire & Life Safety Program and EH&S department projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma and two (2) years of experience in a safety professional field, including experience with inspections and/or code reviews.
  • Knowledge and experience of fire and life safety standards to include application of local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, standards, specifications, and policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in fire prevention, fire safety engineering, or related field.
  • Experience implementing a fire safety program of similar size and scope.
  • Possession of State of Texas FEL-B licenses or greater, and/or State of Texas RME-I licenses or greater.
  • Project management experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts, and best practices in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to fire safety program operations.
  • Ability to use safety and investigating equipment, including fire extinguishers, oxygen analyzers, gas and toxic materials detectors, and personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to utilize computer hardware, devices, and software for inspections, permits, pre-planning, task and project management, etc.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally with a diverse group of campus community members in the course of inspections.
  • Ability to work independently or with small groups without direct supervision.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to take directions.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
  • On-Call Rotation.
