Introduction:
THIS IS A RECRUITMENT FOR THE CONTRACTUAL FIRE SAFETY INSPECTOR I CLASSIFICATION WITH THE OFFICE OF THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL. THE OPEN POSITION IS LOCATED IN THE NORTHEAST REGIONAL OFFICE, WHICH COVERS HARFORD, CECIL, AND CARROLL COUNTIES.
Main Purpose of Job:
The main purpose of this position is the enforcement of State laws in the field of fire prevention and fire inspection to preserve life and protect property from fire and other emergency conditions. The Fire Safety Inspector conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing childcare facilities, foster care, and adoption homes. The employee will also prepare appropriate correspondence to communicate observations of fire code violations, maintain records, file related documents of inspections, determine operation readiness of new and existing fire suppression systems, investigate reported fire code complaints, and testify at legal proceedings and Fire Prevention Commission meetings regarding disputes over inspections and fire code violations.
Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing structures by identifying the occupancy classification, computing the allowable occupant load, inspecting the means of egress elements, and verifying the type of construction for an addition or remodeling project to ensure the structures meet local and State laws. Conducts fire safety inspections of facilities that require licenses by other State agencies, such as health care, public and private schools, correctional facilities, day camps, and migrant camps to ensure fire prevention measures are in place prior to issuing a license. Determines the operation readiness of new and existing fixed fire suppression systems, existing fire detection and alarm systems, and existing portable fire extinguishers prior to occupancy. Verifies code compliance for storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials, flammable and combustible liquids, and gases to prevent fire hazards. Testifies at legal proceedings and Fire Prevention Commission meetings regarding disputes over inspections and fire code violations. Distributes fire prevention material alerts, news releases regarding fire prevention or consumer product safety recalls, or information regarding changes in laws and regulations that may affect the home or facility operators.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
