Job summary

WECTEC Staffing Services is seeking a Fire Safety Engineer as a 1-year contract (W-2) for a remote role with travel on behalf of our client. You will be a Fire Safety SME for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), overseeing all safety analyses including hazard mitigation analysis.

Reports to the onsite Manager. You will review UL 9540a reports, guide fire safety system designs, and engage with fire institutions and first responders.

Qualifications

• Background in fire protection engineering principles, fire dynamics, and battery technology safety.
• Experience with NFPA 855 (Energy Storage Systems), IFC, and UL standards.
• Software skills: FMEA, CFD modeling, and risk assessment methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Review UL 9540a reports from cell-, module-, and up to unit/installation-level and provide direction.
• Guide fire safety system designs for BESS manufacturers and projects.
• Engage with national, state, and local fire agencies and first responders.
• Standardize BESS fire safety messaging across regions and projects.
• Participate in groups and committees shaping industry codes and standards for BESS fire safety.

About the role

Location: Remote with travel. We are looking for a Fire Safety Engineer on behalf of our client. This is a 1-year contract assignment (W-2). You will be a Fire Safety subject matter expert (SME) for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will oversee all safety analyses for project-level reports, including hazard mitigation analysis (HMA). The team performs failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), heat flux analysis, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to ensure that all fire safety requirements are met. You will report to the onsite Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Review all UL 9540a reports from cell-, module-, and up through unit/installation-level, and provide direction.
• Offer guidance toward the fire safety system designs of BESS manufacturers and projects.
• Initiate and foster relationships with national, state, and local fire institutions and first responders, including Fire Marshalls, Fire Departments, and educational institutions.
• Standardize information about BESS fire safety systems throughout the organization, ensuring messaging in every region in which our projects are deployed.
• Participate in task groups and technical committees for collaboration and direction of the advancement of industry codes and standards about the safety of battery energy storage systems.
