Job description

Job Description: Fire Protection Engineer

The Fire Protection Engineer position is a technical role within the firm, focusing on project execution for various multi- and single-discipline facility design projects. The engineer will perform fire protection engineering services across small to large scope projects for commercial and government facilities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Performing all aspects of fire protection design services, including conceptual studies, programming, schematic, design development, and construction documents under supervision.
  2. Collaborating with multi-discipline design teams.
  3. Meeting clients to define and validate project scope.
  4. Preparing marketing and presentation materials as directed.
  5. Seeking guidance from senior staff to resolve technical issues.
  6. Supervising support staff, especially during complex problems.
  7. Handling fire protection services during bidding and construction phases, including field visits, RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and record drawings.
  8. Complying with quality control practices.
  9. Working with management and other disciplines.
  10. Mentoring junior staff and participating in team meetings.

Project responsibilities include:

  1. Serving as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer when directed.
  2. Acting as Design Manager on projects.
  3. Preparing scope and fee proposals.
  4. Conducting code analysis and selecting fire protection systems.
  5. Developing detailed drawings and specifications.
  6. Reviewing calculations and work products of team members.
  7. Coordinating drawings with technical specifications and other disciplines.
  8. Responding to QC, Gray Team comments, RFIs, and submittals.
  9. Performing QA/QC reviews and adhering to budgets and schedules.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; a master's is preferred.
  • Licensed Fire Protection Engineer in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • Experience in leading design projects in various sectors and familiarity with delivery methods like Design/Build and CM at Risk.

Additional skills and knowledge:

  • Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP preferred.
  • Certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA encouraged.
  • Active participation in professional organizations like NSPE, SFPE, NFPA.
  • Familiarity with design/production and fire protection analysis software.

Physical requirements:

Primarily sedentary office work, with occasional site visits. Accommodations available for disabilities.

Mandatory in-office days on Mondays and Thursdays, with a third flexible day arranged with supervision to promote collaboration and work-life balance.
