Job summary

Jacobs is hiring a Fire Protection Engineer to coordinate and produce deliverables for fire protection design on U.S. Federal government facilities, including DoD projects.

The role reports to the Senior Fire Protection Group Lead and requires hybrid work with two days in the office weekly. The engineer will act as Designer of Record, manage budgets, supervise junior staff, perform studies and calculations, and present findings to clients.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Safety Technology or related field.
  • At least 4 years of fire protection design experience.
  • Possibility of overseas and U.S. travel.
  • Proficiency in REVIT and related design tools.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Designer of Record (DOR) for fire protection design projects, managing schedule, budget, and delegation of work.
  • Seal/stamp construction drawings and specifications.
  • Gather information, interview stakeholders, perform studies and calculations, and prepare rough layouts.
  • Present findings to clients and stakeholders.
  • Design fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm layouts using hydraulic calculations and relevant codes.
  • Conduct construction administration and field investigations, handling RFIs and change orders.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Fire Protection Group Lead, the Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for the coordination, development, and production of deliverables in support of the overall scope of fire protection design. The Engineer will take ownership of the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of the work assigned and within the agreed project budget. This role leads a design effort as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team that includes architects, structural, mechanical, civil and electrical engineers. The position is in the Federal Buildings Business Unit and works primarily on U.S. Federal Government facilities contracted by Department of Defense clients and other federal agencies. The role is hybrid, requiring a minimum of two days of office attendance per week.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a fast‑paced environment under tight deadlines while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Act as the Designer of Record (DOR) for fire protection design projects, managing schedule, budget, delegation of work to junior staff, quality control and sealing/stamping construction drawings and specifications.
  • Gather information, interview stakeholders, perform studies, calculations, and prepare original rough layouts and sketches as required.
  • Present findings and outcomes to clients and other stakeholders.
  • Perform high‑level tasks under minimal supervision using well‑defined standards, procedures and codes.
  • Conduct product research; assist project designers and architects with materials selection and system research.
  • Design fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm system layouts utilizing hydraulic calculation programs and knowledge of ICC, NFPA and International Building and Fire Codes.
  • Perform construction administration and field investigation tasks, including document management and processing RFIs and change orders.
Team Development Responsibilities
  • Provide staffing development and mentoring for junior staff, ensuring quality delivery of product completed by all supervised by the Fire Protection Engineer.
  • Provide project quality control reviews at project milestones and continuous “over‑the‑shoulder” discipline checks.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Safety Technology or related field.
  • At least 4 years of fire protection design experience.
  • Overseas and U.S. based travel may be required.
  • Proficiency in REVIT.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous DoD experience and familiarity with Federal energy standards, Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) and other government requirements.
  • Experience in Design‑Build and DBIA certification.
  • Clearance or ability to secure a clearance.
  • PE in any U.S. state, having passed the fire protection engineering examination.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position is $97,700.00 to $171,000.00. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
