Job summary

Baltimore County is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to ensure compliance with fire codes through plan review and site inspections.

Under general supervision, you will review construction plans, evaluate sprinkler installations, and advise on materials and methods to mitigate fire hazards, coordinating with architects, engineers, and county agencies to achieve code compliance. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in fire protection or engineering and a valid Maryland driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in fire protection or fire protection engineering, plus two years' experience in fire protection or fire protection engineering work, which included the review of construction plans and specifications for compliance with building and/or fire protection codes.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, plus four years experience in fire protection or fire protection engineering work, which included the review of construction plans and specifications for compliance with building and/or fire protection codes.
  • Additional qualifying education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Proof of licenses, certifications, and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications; diplomas or transcripts must show the major field of study.
  • Proof of degree equivalency required for degrees from outside the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews construction plans and specifications to determine compliance with the Baltimore County Fire Prevention Code, Baltimore County Building Code, State of Maryland Fire Prevention Code, NFPA Life Safety Code, and other standards and codes.
  • Evaluates and reviews sprinkler systems, fire line installations, construction materials, mechanical devices, chemical, gas, and flammable liquid installations, and fire protection equipment for compliance with fire code requirements.
  • Recommends materials, equipment, or methods for alleviation of conditions conducive to fire.
  • Reviews designs of sprinkler installations for sufficiency and code compliance.
  • Confers with other engineers, architects, building and fire officials, and personnel of other County agencies concerning the achievement of fire code compliance.
  • Conducts fire protection field inspections to resolve difficult or complex code issues.
