Job description

About The Role

This role is an exciting opportunity to grow your fire protection design career by working hands-on with real projects while learning directly from experienced engineers. You’ll apply industry-standard tools and design practices across fire sprinkler, standpipe, and fire alarm systems, collaborate with project teams and public agencies, and contribute meaningful technical work that supports both project success and client relationships. If you’re eager to build strong fundamentals, take ownership of your work, and make an impact early in your career, this position offers a clear path for professional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Perform assignments designed to develop professional general knowledge and abilities, requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria needed to carry out a sequence of related CADD and fire protection engineering tasks.
  • Assume a limited degree of judgment on work details and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of design alternatives.
  • Using prescribed methods, perform specific and limited portions of an experienced engineer’s broader assignment.
  • Produce construction documents in Revit and AutoCAD for fire sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump, fire alarm, and life safety systems.
  • Perform fire protection design calculations (hydraulic calculations, water supply analysis, sprinkler hazard classifications, device layouts, etc.), sketches, technical comparisons, and similar technical work as required by assignment under direct supervision of the project engineer.
  • Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjust and correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results, and follow operations through a series of related and detailed steps or processes.
  • Research code issues (including NFPA standards and the International Fire Code) and work with city, state, county, and fire marshal officials.
  • Coordinate fire protection layouts with architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines using BIM tools.
  • Research design options and document findings for project engineers and/or project managers.
  • Take an active role in new business development by performing quality production work to build strong relationships with existing clients.

You will love our unique Full Spectrum Approach™ that holistically champions the needs of our people, clients, and company to create a better experience for all. As a multidisciplinary company, with 11 in-house disciplines, this approach helps facilitate a deeper understanding of the design process, further enriching your professional growth and development.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 13, 13R, 14, 20, and 72, the International Building and Fire Codes, and related local amendments.
  • Possesses a basic understanding of the approval and permitting process for projects.
  • Understands project schedules and budgets and is able to work efficiently within project guidelines.
  • Communicates in a timely and effective manner within the team and with various agencies and other disciplines working on a project.
  • Proficiency in Revit and experience with AutoCAD; experience with fire sprinkler layout software (such as AutoSPRINK or HydraCAD) and Navisworks or Bluebeam is a plus.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks or projects.
Education
  • Associate or technical degree in Drafting/Design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in fire protection design (sprinkler and/or fire alarm), with a specific emphasis on commercial, multifamily, or national retail rollout programs preferred.
  • NICET certification (Water-Based Systems Layout and/or Fire Alarm Systems) preferred, or willingness to pursue.
The estimated starting hourly range for this role is $35-$45/hr.
