Job summary

Stantec in Seattle is seeking a Fire Protection Designer to lead the design, analysis, and coordination of fire and life safety systems for a variety of facilities. You will develop fire alarm, detection, suppression, smoke control, and related systems while delivering clear technical reports to clients.

You will work with architects, structural, mechanical, electrical, and other disciplines, apply building codes and standards, and collaborate with AHJs and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • EIT licensure strongly preferred, ideally in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of fire alarm, detection, suppression, and life safety system design.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and fire protection–related computational tools.
  • Experience with adopted building codes and government standards (DoD, VA, GSA).
  • Thorough understanding of ICC and NFPA codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and engineering of fire alarm, detection, suppression, smoke control, and special hazards systems.
  • Develop and review life safety plans and deliverables.
  • Provide life safety and building code consulting services.
  • Analyze smoke management, means of egress, and fire hazards.

Your Opportunity

We are seeking a Fire Protection Designer to lead the design, analysis, and coordination of fire and life safety systems across a wide range of project types. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders. This role involves both technical design and strategic consulting to support code compliance, performance-based solutions, and client objectives.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer fire alarm, fire detection, fire suppression, smoke control, and special hazard systems for new and existing facilities
  • Develop and review life safety plans and fire protection engineering deliverables
  • Provide life safety and building code consulting services
  • Analyze smoke management systems, means of egress, and fire hazards
  • Develop site fire protection features and fire department access plans
  • Perform alternative means of compliance (AMOC) studies and Performance-Based Design (PBD) analyses
  • Interface with local AHJs and building owner insurance representatives
  • Collaborate closely with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil engineering teams
  • Communicate with clients and prepare clear, concise technical reports and documentation
Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams
  • Willingness to travel up to 15% as project needs require
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant fire protection engineering experience
  • Prior experience in healthcare, mission-critical, and/or semiconductor markets is preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean MVR

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
