Job summary

Stantec seeks a Fire Protection Designer to lead design, analysis, and coordination of fire and life safety systems across diverse projects. The role requires deep technical expertise, strong communication, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.

The candidate will contribute to code compliance, performance-based solutions, and client objectives, with opportunity to work on healthcare, mission-critical, and semiconductor markets. Travel up to 15% may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of fire protection engineering experience.
  • EIT preferred, ideally in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Knowledge of ICC/NFPA codes and standards.
  • Ability to travel up to 15%.
  • Healthcare/mission-critical/semiconductor market experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design fire alarm, detection, suppression, smoke control, and special hazards systems.
  • Develop and review life safety plans and deliverables.
  • Provide life safety and building code consulting services.
  • Analyze smoke management, means of egress, and fire hazards.
  • Develop site fire protection features and fire dept access plans.
  • Perform AMOC studies and Performance-Based Design analyses.
  • Interface with AHJs and owner/insurance reps.
  • Collaborate with architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil teams.
  • Prepare clear technical reports and documentation.

Your Opportunity

We are seeking a Fire Protection Designer to lead the design, analysis, and coordination of fire and life safety systems across a wide range of project types. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders. This role involves both technical design and strategic consulting to support code compliance, performance-based solutions, and client objectives.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer fire alarm, fire detection, fire suppression, smoke control, and special hazard systems for new and existing facilities
  • Develop and review life safety plans and fire protection engineering deliverables
  • Provide life safety and building code consulting services
  • Analyze smoke management systems, means of egress, and fire hazards
  • Develop site fire protection features and fire department access plans
  • Perform alternative means of compliance (AMOC) studies and Performance-Based Design (PBD) analyses
  • Interface with local AHJs and building owner insurance representatives
  • Collaborate closely with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil engineering teams
  • Communicate with clients and prepare clear, concise technical reports and documentation
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • EIT License strongly preferred, ideally in Fire Protection Engineering

  • Strong working knowledge of fire alarm, fire suppression, and life safety system design

  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and fire protection–related computational tools

  • Experience working with adopted building codes and government standards (DoD, VA, GSA)

  • Thorough understanding of ICC and NFPA codes and standards

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams

  • Willingness to travel up to 15% as project needs require

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering is preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant fire protection engineering experience

  • Prior experience in healthcare, mission-critical, and/or semiconductor markets is preferred

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean MVR

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range

Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA, VA Areas- $93,900.00 - $136,200.00 Annually

Pay Transparency

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary

In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
