Job Overview

Jensen Hughes is seeking an experienced Fire Protection Consultant in the Pacific Northwest, ideally near Portland, Oregon or Bellevue, Washington. The role requires a strong background in fire protection engineering, building and fire code consulting, fire protection systems, and fire protection strategies.

The successful candidate will coordinate and conduct building plan reviews, interpret building codes, develop alternative solutions, prepare design reports, and collaborate with fire protection engineering design teams and authorities having jurisdiction. Strong analytical and creative thinking skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Manage and implement a wide variety of engineering design and consulting projects.
• Ensure client needs and expectations are met by completing assigned tasks on schedule and within budget.
• Coordinate and conduct building and fire code reviews and analyses, including plan reviews and site visits.
• Prepare and peer‑review project‑related technical reports.
• Develop fire protection strategies, performance‑based design approaches, and alternative solutions to resolve client design issues.
• Communicate effectively with project team members, clients, and other stakeholders.
• Support business development and client relationship management efforts in the sub‑region (up to 10% of role). Consultants are expected to adopt a “seller‑doer” mentality.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Minimum 4 years of experience in code consulting, fire suppression or alarm system design, and performance‑based strategy development in a project design environment.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering (preferably fire protection), architecture, or a related field.
• Registered Professional Engineer license, NICET certification, or equivalent strongly preferred; significant industry experience in fire protection and code consulting is also considered.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven project management experience.
• Experience developing building code concepts and equivalencies, conducting building plan reviews, and performing field reviews/inspections.
• Ability to present clear and technically sound fire protection engineering strategies.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with other industry professionals, associated trades, and jurisdictional authorities.
• Knowledge of fire alarm and fire sprinkler design is a plus.

Salary

National pay range: $105,000 – $130,000 USD.
