Job summary

The City of Niagara Falls is seeking a specialized Fire Prevention Officer in the Fire Prevention Department. This role supervises inspections, investigations and public education programs to ensure compliance with municipal, provincial and federal fire codes.

Applicants must have extensive knowledge of fire prevention, building systems, and report writing, plus Ontario DZ license and CPR/First Aid certificates. This permanent, on-site position carries a competitive salary and benefits.

Qualifications

• Extensive knowledge of fire prevention, inspection and investigation methods.
• Thorough knowledge of Fire Department rules and bylaws and related regulations.
• Knowledge of building construction, wiring, heating systems, industrial processes and flammable materials.
• Ability to engage diverse contacts and deliver fire prevention programs.
• Ability to read building plans and prepare detailed technical reports.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and the public.
• Typing and computer skills would be an asset.
• Minimum education: secondary school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Supervises assigned staff in inspections, investigations and public education programs.
• Inspects all types of buildings to ensure regulations compliance; may issue orders and carry out inspections.
• Investigates fires to determine origin and assist in evidence gathering.
• Delivers public education programs on fire prevention and safety.
• Prepares permits, inspections, orders, reports and correspondence.
• Maintains records and statistics for Fire Prevention operations.
• Performs related duties as required.
