Job summary

The Valdosta Police Department seeks a skilled municipal vehicle mechanic to maintain and repair its fleet of cars, trucks, and specialized gear. You will diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, replace worn components, and document maintenance activities for the department.

You will perform welding to repair body parts, assist with fire pump service, and participate in annual ladder tests to ensure readiness of emergency equipment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment for repairing a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of applicable city, state and federal regulations.
• Experience or training in vehicle lubrication and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and preventive maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, engine and system problems and perform repairs.
• Rebuild or replace major vehicle components and perform welding as needed.
• Estimate parts and time for repairs and keep daily maintenance logs.

Description

This position is responsible for the mechanical repair and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.

• Performs routine maintenance and preventative care.
• Evaluates mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment.
• Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, engine, fuel system, cooling system, HVAC, brake and suspension problems and makes repairs.
• Rebuilds, replaces or repairs major vehicle components.
• Performs welding to repair body components.
• Estimates time and materials needed to complete repairs. ? Researches illustrated parts breakdowns to identify required parts.
• Maintains daily log of all maintenance actions.
• Performs routine and preventative maintenance on fire pumps; repairs and overhauls fire pumps; performs annual pump tests.
• Assists with annual aerial ladder tests.
• Performs related duties

Requirements

• Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Fire Mechanic, Fire Page 2

• Knowledge of work safety principles.
• Skill in cutting and reshaping metals in the fabrication of parts.
• Skill in the operation of hydraulic and electrical test equipment.

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification
