Qualifications

$21.22 - $27.05Starting salary based on qualifications and experience.Job DescriptionFire Marshal InspectorGeneral Statement of DutiesUnder the supervision of the Fire Marshal, the employee conducts fire inspections, reviews building plans, and responds to emergencies involving fire, medical situations, and rescue operations. Additionally, the employee provides fire and life safety education programs and conducts investigations into fire origin and cause.Illustrative Examples of Work- Inspects businesses, group homes, foster homes, schools, daycares, churches, and construction sites for fire-code compliance.- Under the supervision of the Lead Fire Plans Examiner, may perform fire plan reviews, issue operational and construction permits, and conduct inspections of work performed under issued permits.- Under the supervision of the Lead Fire Investigator, may work with Federal, State, and Local law enforcement agencies to perform fire scene examinations, interview witnesses, collect evidence, and generate reports related to fire origin and cause investigations.- Responds to emergencies including but not limited to hazardous material, fire & rescue, weather, mass casualty, and terrorism incidents- Assists in coordinating training for emergency services agencies, law enforcement agencies, educational facilities, local industry, and county government.- Provides fire and life safety education to schools, nursing homes, industries, and individuals regarding preventing fires and emergencies.- Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.- Required to participate in an after-normal working hours on-call rotation to respond to emergencies, conduct fire origin and cause investigations, and conduct fire code inspections.- Subject to recall to duty in disaster and emergency incidents or events.- Assists Emergency Management and supports emergency management operations as required.- Performs other related duties as required.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Thorough knowledge of the methods, standards, practices, strategies, techniques, and tactics used in fire prevention methods, fire suppression, fire service training, fire cause determination, and arson investigation.- Thorough knowledge of standard fire prevention codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and federal, state, county, and departmental standards, rules, and regulations.- Ability to perform fire suppression activities- Ability to wear SCBA or other type of respirator.- Ability to supervise and direct the work of employees.- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county officials, employees, architects, professional engineers, contractors, homeowners, business owners, and the general public.Physical Requirements- Must be able to perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data; ability to operate electronic devices, i.e., computers, smartphones, and tablets; perform extensive reading and review of building and fire codes; and review building plans for code compliance.- Worker is subject to interior and exterior firefighting conditions.- Worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.- Worker is subject to noise.- Worker is subject to vibration.- Worker is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, or exposure to chemicals.- Worker is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin, such as fumes, odors, mists, gases, and products of combustion.- Must be able to wear a respirator.- Must be able to work in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.- Must be subject to contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.Education and Experience- Considerable experience in fire prevention, fire suppression, and fire investigation.- High School Diploma or GEDLicenses and Certifications- North Carolina Driver’s License.- North Carolina Certified Firefighter- Fire Inspector Level I with the ability to obtain Fire Inspector Level II within 24 months.- North Carolina Fire Investigation Technician (FIT) Certification- NIEMS 100, 200 certifications.- Hazardous Materials
