Job summary

City of Pittsburgh in the Public Safety, Bureau of Fire seeks a Firefighter/Officer to manage and direct fire suppression, protection, prevention, rescue services, and first-responder activities within the City.

The role directs assigned personnel, ensures safety, responds to emergencies, and operates and maintains Bureau vehicles and equipment. Shifts are required, and EMT certification is mandatory.

Qualifications

• Must currently hold the permanent rank of Firefighter in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire as of August 10, 2026.
• Must be presently employed by the City of Pittsburgh and remain continuously employed until time of appointment.
• A current, valid Class A, B or C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License maintained throughout employment.
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Responsibilities

• Manages activities aimed at fire suppression, protection, prevention, rescue services and first responder within the City.
• Directs the activities of assigned personnel.
• Responsible for the safety of Firefighters.
• Assumes the duties of command at fire ground until relieved by a senior officer.
• Responds to emergency calls for assistance to extinguish fires, save lives and perform rescue operations.
• Ensures adherence to City and departmental safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Operates and maintains fire hoses, nozzles, and equipment to protect exposures and extinguish fires.
• Directs driving, operation and maintenance of Bureau vehicles.
• Drives, operates and maintains Bureau vehicles.
• Uses procedures and equipment to extinguish fires, overhaul the fire area, ventilate gases and smoke, and salvage property.
• Inspects districts for proper working condition of fire alarm systems and hydrants, building layouts, and preplanned procedures.
• Works all shifts.
• Operates business machines and office equipment as needed.
• Conducts drills and exercises to maintain proficiency.
• Maintains records and prepares reports.
• Performs routine housekeeping and maintenance at the fire station.
• Participates in public relations and/or public education activities.
• May act as a Fire Captain in Fire Captain's absence.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission for the following examination. You must pass the written examination in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position.

• Written: Based on the knowledge/abilities listed in the Position Description section of this announcement. The exam date is November 4, 2026. Written examination valued at 100 percent. All questions are based on the duties and responsibilities of the position as listed in this announcement. The exam sources and test plan are listed in the separate Fire Lieutenant Written Candidate Preparation Guide .
• Service Credit: Candidates scoring a passing grade of 75 or higher on the written examination will have added to his/her score an additional ½ point for each full year of service in the Bureau of Fire, to a maximum of 10 points. Service credit is only given for completion of full years of service as of the examination date.
• Review Period: Candidates will be advised of the time and place for review of examination papers.
• Eligibility List: Candidates with a passing score will be ranked on the Eligibility List in the order of the final grade achieved on the examination, including service credit. Ties will be broken by lottery. The Civil Service Commission will certify as eligible for promotion only those candidates on the Eligibility List who have served at least two years as a Firefighter by the date of certification.
• Medical: Not Required.

POSITION DUTIES

• Manages activities aimed at fire suppression, protection, prevention, rescue services, hazardous materials incidents and first responder within the City.
• Directs the activities of assigned personnel.
• Responsible for the safety of Firefighters.
• Assumes the duties of command at fire ground until relieved by a senior officer.
• Responds to emergency calls for assistance (e.g., structural fires, hazardous materials incidents, medical calls), to extinguish fires, save lives and perform rescue operations.
• Ensures that all City and departmental safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures are followed.
• Ensures advancement and operation of fire hoses, nozzles, and equipment to protect exposures, confine the fire and apply extinguishing agents to put out fire for protection of life and property.
• Directs driving, operation and maintenance of Bureau vehicles (e.g., pumper engine, aerial ladder, and support vehicles, etc).
• Drives, operates and maintains Bureau vehicles.
• Utilizes existing procedures, tools, and apparatus to extinguish fires, overhaul the fire area, ventilate any hot or dangerous gases and smoke, and to salvage property in a home or building in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Inspects district as part of the fire prevention and acquaintance program to ensure proper working condition and serviceability of fire alarm systems and hydrants, location of large buildings, sprinkler systems installed, code violations and physical layout including developing preplanned fire operating procedures.
• Works all shifts.
• Operates business machines (e.g., calculator, adding machine, PC and peripheral equipment, fax, typewriter, CRT, copier, etc).
• Conducts and participates in scheduled drills and exercises to maintain a high level of proficiency in use of equipment and operating procedures.
• Maintains records and prepares accurate reports.
• Performs routine housekeeping and maintenance procedures at the fire station.
• Participates in public relations and/or public education activities.
