Job summary

The City of Saratoga Springs is seeking a Firefighter Intern for the Fire Department to gain hands-on experience in emergency response, fire suppression, medical aid, and fire prevention. Job description

The City of Saratoga Springs currently has openings for a Firefighter Intern in our Fire Department. This position is an opportunity to explore emergency services by responding to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, urban search and rescue, and wildland fires; other calls to protect life and property; to participate in fire prevention and training; and to maintain the fire station and emergency equipment to be used in rendering aid in calls for service. This position has a 6 month to 12 month time frame.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Respond to fire alarms with assigned company.
  • Operate certain type of emergency equipment in a non IDLH atmosphere.
  • Respond to emergency medical incidents and assist in patient transportation to local hospitals.
  • Participate in fire station housekeeping.
  • Attend special instruction in firefighting and emergency medical techniques; perform drill with other engine company crew members; become familiar with the city layout, hydrant systems, and established routes.
  • Participate in public education opportunities.

Qualifications

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent. Must have or be currently enrolled in EMT (and/or) Firefighter I & II.

Requisites:

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must have refrained from ever using hallucinogenic drugs; marijuana in the past (2) years; all other illegal drug use (including steroids) in the past (5) years; must be a non-smoker.

Must have a good driving record free from "at fault" accidents and convictions for violations of criminal traffic infarctions to include adjudication withheld for the past (12) months. A good driving record will include no driver's license suspension within the last (5) years.

Must not have been convicted to any 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor within the last (3) years.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Respond to quickly changing situations under emergency conditions.
  • Work in hostile and dangerous conditions.

  • Work under strict discipline and follow orders.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment.
  • Demonstrate physical aptitude as required by essential functions and maintain that necessary level of physical fitness and aptitude.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
  • Running, walking, crouching, or crawling during emergency operations.
  • Moving equipment and injured patients.
  • Climbing stair and/or ladders.
  • Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Read and understand technical materials, rules, regulations, and procedures in both firefighting and emergency medical services.
  • Operate and perform basic service maintenance procedures on all firefighting equipment.
  • Retain presence of mind in emergency situations.
  • Think quickly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately.
  • Work in adverse physical locations and conditions.
  • Perform heavy lifting and physical maneuvering.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during your internship.

  • Work in intense life-threatening conditions; exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, swift water and or static bodies of water, heights and noise.
Compensation And Benefits

Salary Range:

Min: $17.28/hr.

Mid: $20.73/hr.

Max: $24.19/hr.

Benefits:

This position does not qualify for any benefits.

Other Information

Working a holiday that falls on a scheduled shift is optional and while not required is the preferred standard. The applicant is strongly encouraged to consider working the holiday as it will be a good indication to the applicant of the life experiences and sacrifice that are part of an employee of the Fire department.
