Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Inspects commercial, industrial and other building types for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention laws.
• Documents violations of laws, ordinances and safety standards; reports findings.
• Reviews fire permit applications and follows through with permit approval process; interacts with clients and professionals.
• Prepares regular and special reports on inspections.
• Inspects automatic and private fire alarm systems and extinguishing equipment; checks storage of explosives and flammables.
• Inspects gas/oil tanks and liquid petroleum gas tanks for compliance on properties.
• Inspects all new buildings to ensure code compliance.
• Checks license requests for compliance with fire laws.
• Prepares and presents cases in court to enforce fire prevention laws and ordinances.
• Addresses fire hazards related to construction and storage of flammables and explosives.
• Performs related duties as required.

Job description

The purpose of this job is to enforce fire prevention standards and promoting the development and use of effective fire inspection methods and codes.This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

• Within their certification conducts inspections of commercial, industrial, and all other building types, including those under construction for fire hazards, protective equipment, adequacy of fire escapes and fire exits, and general compliance with fire prevention laws.
• Documents and reports violations of laws, ordinances, codes, and established safety standards.
• Enforces state and local fire codes, local ordinances, and general statues by reviewing fire permit application submittals consisting of detailed plans, and interacting with internal customers, external customers, and design professionals; maintaining documentation; and monitoring the fire permit approval process.
• Prepares regular and special reports on inspections.
• Inspects the installation and maintenance of automatic and other private alarm systems and fire extinguishing equipment and the storage of explosives and flammables.
• Inspects installations of gas tanks, oil tanks, and liquid petroleum gas tanks on public and private property for compliance with rules and regulations.
• Inspects all new buildings located on public or private property, ensuring compliance of rules and regulations.
• Checks all license requests to ensure compliance with fire laws.
• Prepares and presents cases in court to ensure enforcement of fire prevention laws and ordinances.
• Addresses fire hazards involving various types of construction and storage of flammables and explosives if certified.
• Performs related work as required.

• Requires the ability acquire and maintain all appropriate licenses.
• Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
• Obtain Level I Inspector certification within 12 months.
• Obtain Level II Inspector certification within predetermined timeline.

High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferably supplemented by completion of specialized courses in fire prevention and safety methods.
