Conducts fire safety inspections of school facilities to determine existence of fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment (such as sprinkler systems) and general compliance with appropriate codes and fire prevention standards; investigates complaints of fire safety hazards; compiles data and orders actions to comply with codes and ordinances, as applicable; issues citations for violations of state and County fire codes; advises property owners of action necessary to resolve violations. Conducts fire and life safety inspections on educational facilities as required for compliance with the state building codes and local ordinances. Develops and conducts fire prevention and life safety education and information programs for the public, businesses, schools, emergency responders and civic groups. Performs various clerical and administrative duties associated with preparing and maintaining technical records and reports connected to fire inspections, including entering requests into computerized database, and preparing fire inspection reports to document activities and results of each inspection. May respond to emergency incidents to provide technical assistance to the incident commander.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations pertaining to fire service activities. Considerable knowledge of administrative practices in a local government environment. Working knowledge of computer software including Word, Excel, Visio, Firehouse and GIS applications. Skills in collecting and analyzing data. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to use sound judgment and determine best options and make decisions. Ability to interpret, explain, and apply laws, policies, procedures and regulations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with emergency agencies and personnel, volunteer emergency service organizations, public officials at the local, state and federal levels, business and community leaders and organizations, other department heads, superiors and employees.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:

Graduation from high school and 5 years' experience in fire code enforcement.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must reside within 20 miles of Hoke County, Possession of a valid driver's license , Must possess NC Fire Inspector Level III, NC Hazardous Materials Operations Level I Certification, Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) or the Fire Investigator Technician (FIT) (You Need one of these)

NC Fire and Life Safety Educator I (and the ability to obtain Level II within 2 years), NC Fire Officer Certification

SALARY:

Grade 67 ($45,371-51,333) + BENEFITS
