Job summary

Nature of Work

The Rolling Meadows Fire Department is seeking a motivated and experienced professional to join our team as a full-timeFire Inspector. Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, this position performs technical and administrative work in fire prevention, life safety, and code enforcement. The Fire Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections of commercial, industrial, multi-family, and institutional occupancies; reviewing building plans for fire and life safety compliance; and ensuring adherence to applicable local, state, and national fire codes.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct fire and life safety inspections of commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-family occupancies to identify fire hazards, enforce applicable fire and life safety codes, and secure correction of violations.
  • Perform required inspections and re-inspections associated with permits, new construction, remodeling projects, and occupancy changes.
  • Review building plans for compliance with fire and life safety requirements, including fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, means of egress, fire-resistance-rated construction, and other fire protection features.
  • Inspect buildings under construction to verify compliance with approved plans and applicable fire codes.
  • Investigate complaints regarding fire hazards and code violations and prepare reports outlining findings and corrective actions.
  • Follow up on false alarm incidents and fire protection system impairments to ensure compliance with applicable ordinances and regulations.
  • Coordinate fire code requirements and fire protection systems with contractors, architects, engineers, business owners, and other governmental agencies.
  • Serve as a Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Counselor.
  • Assist with public education initiatives, fire prevention programs, and community risk reduction efforts.
Competencies & Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or a related field is preferred.
  • Have three (3) to five (5) years of experience in fire prevention, fire inspections, code enforcement, emergency management, fire department operations, building inspections, local government operations, or a related field.
  • Possess or be able to obtain Illinois OSFM Fire Inspector, ICC Fire Inspector, or comparable fire prevention certifications.
  • Be able to read and interpret construction plans and fire protection system drawings.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
Environmental Conditions

The physical and environmental conditions described below are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position.

  • Work may involve on-site response to fires, accidents, explosions and hazardous incidents.
  • Exposure to smoke, hazardous materials, chemicals, unstable structures and other potentially dangerous conditions may occur.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, stretching, squatting, kneeling, climbing, balancing and use of hands and fingers to operate equipment is required.
  • Specific visual abilities include working in environments with poor or artificial lighting.
  • Ability to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Work may be performed in extreme temperatures, high noise levels and environments with unpleasant odors or other uncomfortable conditions.
  • Duties are performed in both a moderately quiet office environment and moderately loud field environments.
