"Where passion and quality unite – HFD Fire Equipment Mechanics"
The Honolulu Fire Department , is looking for a Fire Equipment Mechanic to preform repairs, modifications, and maintenance of all fire fighting apparatuses, trailers, fire and rescue equipment.
As a Fire Equipment Mechanic, your duties and responsibilities will include:
- Diagnose motor knocks, noises, and mechanical failures.
- Repairs, overhauls, inspects and maintains major components including gasoline or diesel engines brake systems (air and hydraulic), heavy duty transmission and differentials, and front and rear axles and suspensions.
- Repairs portable and onboard battery chargers, portable power plants, troubleshooting electricals faults and wiring of electrical systems on fire apparatuses, heavy police vehicles and other automotive/heavy equipment
- Repairing and testing of centrifugal pumps, compressors, firefighting valves, and hydraulic systems on apparatuses and equipment used by HFD.
- Performs other duties related to mechanical work on fire apparatus and equipment, and other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Experience Requirement
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position.
Applicable Experience : Experience in maintaining/repairing heavy vehicles, or commercial vehicle over 26,000 pounds (GCWR).
Applicable Skills
- Knowledge of the theory and principles of the internal combustion engine.
- Knowledge of the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical systems of automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of the theory and principles of high-pressure positive displacement and centrifugal pumps.
- Knowledge of the use of hydraulic oil presses, lathes, gauges, gear or bearing pullers, sanding machines, spray guns, testing equipment and other mechanical implements used in the trade.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade, and the ability to plan, lay out and set up work.
- Ability to locate and adjust mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automobile equipment.
- Ability to maintain and repair non-automotive equipment such as high-pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, etc.
- Ability to make repairs using modern tools, equipment and procedures, including welding and performing simple body and fender repairs.
- Ability to interpret and work from rough sketches, blueprints, or electrical schematics as well as from oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use computers, software, and diagnostic programs for engines, transmissions, OEM components, and brake systems.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and a current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate.
- Current vacancies requires a valid Type 3/automobile driver's license and a State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate, prior to appointment.
The above licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
