Job summary

Kern County Fire Department seeks a Fire Equipment Mechanic to perform maintenance and repair on heavy motorized equipment, including diesel engines. Candidates must have 3 years of relevant experience and a valid California Class A license.

Examination Schedule
  • Written Exam: Qualified candidates will be notified of the testing date five days prior to the examination
Examination

Written Exam: (100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel engine mechanics as applied to maintenance and repair; and the procedures, tools equipment, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of both light and heavy motorized equipment; knowledge of smog control devices and diagnostic equipment.

Applicants must attain at least 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/Employment Standards

Three (3) years of experience repairing heavy motorized equipment, including one (1) year of experience with diesel engines.

Possession of a valid California Class A Driver's License required to successfully pass the six (6) months probationary period.

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which appointment(s) will be made at the Kern County Fire Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
