The Lateral Fire Engineer position will have the opportunity of working with the various Fire Department Divisions (Operations & Emergency Medical Services, Public Safety Communications, Community Risk Reduction, and the Community and Outreach Services), including interacting with other City Departments. Additionally, the Department is expanding its Urban Search and Rescue (USCSAR), HazMAT Program, Wildland, Bike Team, and many other specialties.
The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge in fire engineering, task management, project coordination, and the ability to work in a fluid rapid pace setting as part of a team, have an interest and passion in helping develop programs and services, and support the Department’s Mission, Vision and Core Values. TESTING

JOB SUMMARY
Under direction, to have primary responsibility for driving and operating firefighting and emergency response equipment; to perform skilled firefighting and emergency service duties; to perform fire inspections and prevention work; to perform station and equipment maintenance; to assist with training of fire personnel and less experienced fire personnel staff; and to perform related work as required.
This is the advanced, specialized skill working level for City firefighting and emergency service assignments. Incumbents are expected to be fully trained and able to perform technical equipment operation assignments, as well as normal firefighting duties.
Responds to fire and emergency alarms; drives equipment, selecting the most direct route to fire and emergency scenes; performs technical equipment operation assignments at fire and emergency scenes; performs normal firefighting, emergency medical service, and other emergency functions as needed; may assist with laying hose lines and raising ladders; performs regular station and equipment maintenance work; cleans living quarters, maintaining them in a clean and orderly condition; tests fire hoses and hydrants; relays and receives radio messages at fire scenes; assists with cleanup and salvage work after fires are extinguished; reviews Fire Department rules and regulations, fire hazards, firefighting techniques, and emergency service procedures; participates in training exercises; performs fire inspection and prevention work; may assist with training less experienced staff; may meet the public, making presentations to further Department public relations; may assume the duties of a Fire Captain in a Captain's absence.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Possession of appropriate valid California Class C Driver license with firefighter endorsements at time of application and maintenance of said license in good standing throughout employment in this position.
- Possession of a current Emergency Medical Technician certification at time of application and maintenance of said license in good standing throughout employment in this position.
Training and ExperienceEducation: State Fire Marshal Apparatus Operator 1A & 1B Certification; State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certification; and Montebello Fire Department Acting Engineer certification (or equivalent).
Only For Internal Promotions:Montebello Fire Department Acting Engineer certification (or equivalent).Work Background: Three years of responsible work experience comparable to that of a Firefighter with the City of Montebello
OR a current/non-probationary Fire Engineer in good standing with a California Fire agency.
Knowledge of:- Methods and principles of fire suppression, fire investigation, fire prevention, emergency medical response, and hazardous material control.
- Operation, maintenance, and capabilities of firefighting and emergency rescue equipment.
- Practical hydraulics and pump operations.
- Fire codes, laws, rules, and regulations.
Ability to:- Understand and act in accordance with Department policy, rules, and regulations.
- Drive fire and emergency response equipment safely and skillfully in accordance with traffic rules and regulations.
- Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of fire and emergency response equipment.
- Apply firefighting and emergency service techniques and methods in a variety of situations.
- Compute engine and nozzle pressures and operate pumping equipment.
- Interpret, explain, and apply fire codes and regulations.
- Assist with fire inspections and prevention activities.
- Meet established standards of physical endurance and agility.
- Effectively represent the fire service functions of the Department with the public.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Learn local geography, including the location of mains, hydrants, and the major fire hazards of the City.
