Job Description

The purpose of the Fire and EMS Lab Instructor Basic Life Support position is to instruct and guide fire and emergency medical services Basic Life Support (BLS) students and firefighter students through the psychomotor skills introduction, acquisition, reinforcement, mastery, and evaluation stages in fire and emergency medical services education programs; provide simulation activities, tutoring, and remedial assistance to students, provide feedback to program faculty regarding skill acquisition and mastery, as well as to provide instructional resources required to meet state-mandated instructor-to-student ratios for fire and EMS program lab/practical skills and simulation. The Fire and EMS Lab Instructor Basic Life Support is also responsible for maintaining, inventorying, and replacing/resetting assigned equipment and lab/classroom spaces; the Fire and EMS Lab Instructor Basic Life Support, as designated by the department/program head/chair, may serve as a lead lab instructor/mentor to help guide and orient new lab instructors to the College, division and department/programs, policies, procedures, and expectations and perform other duties as assigned.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Current unrestricted certification as an Emergency Medical Technician [EMT] (National Registry or Virginia Certification).
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of fire and emergency medical services (essential life support), education standards, and scope of practice.
  • Knowledge of and experience with competency-based educational techniques.
  • Knowledge of standardized patient concepts, processes, and practices.
  • Knowledge of curricula and accreditation standards.
Skills
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Ability to
  • Instruct students through psychomotor skill introduction, acquisition, and evaluation of psychomotor skills performance and provide simulation activities, tutoring, and remedial assistance.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse educational environment.
  • Work at all campus and off-campus locations.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Work in IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) atmospheres and situations.
  • Appropriately don, wear, and doff personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, coat, pants, boot, glove, hood, helmet, eye protection and respirator, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Complete new department/program-specific employee entrance and annual in-service training, maintain the minimum required qualifications and work the minimum number of hours per month/semester as established in the department/program policies and procedures.

Additional Considerations

Current unrestricted certification in any of the following areas: Virginia Firefighter II, Virginia Fire Instructor II, Virginia Firefighter I and II TtT, Virginia Fire Officer I, Virginia 1403 Compliance Officer, Virginia MayDay Firefighter Down TtT, Virginia S3 EVOC TtT, Peninsula Burn Team Training and Virginia Office of EMS Education Coordinator.

Current instructor-level certifications in any of the following areas: Basics Life Support (AHA - BLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), AHA -Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), AHA -Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), NAEMT Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC), AAP Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers (PEPP), Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS), NAEMT Tactical Combat Casualty Care (LTC) and NAEMT Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC).
