Job summary

The Town of Maiden seeks a Fire Captain to supervise firefighting personnel on an assigned shift, coordinate emergency response, and act as incident commander when leaders are unavailable.

You will oversee station readiness, training, reports, and community safety programs, ensuring adherence to standards and effective fire suppression, rescue, and EMS operations.

Must hold required certifications and meet age/education requirements as outlined in the job description.

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Considerable experience as a firefighter/engineer.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise emergency response operations including fires, rescues, EMS calls, and hazardous material incidents.
  • Command incidents using ICS protocols; determine strategies, allocate resources, and ensure safety.
  • Train and evaluate; enforce discipline and operational standards.
  • Oversee station readiness, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and supply management.
  • Represent the department in public outreach, fire prevention, and educational programs.
  • Complete and review reports on incidents, maintenance, training, and personnel performance.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Town geography, infrastructure, and potential hazards.

Job description

Classification Summary

To serve as a shift supervisor and lead the work of firefighting personnel, ensuring effective emergency response, supervision, and coordination of fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services on an assigned shift.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This is the first line supervisory role in the fire department. The Fire Captain manages fire station operations, oversees personnel and equipment, acts as incident commander in the absence of the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief during emergencies, and ensures compliance with departmental standards and policies. The role demands leadership, tactical decision-making, and the ability to train and evaluate staff. Work is conducted under the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief and reviewed through performance metrics and operational outcomes.

Major Duties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of firefighting principles, emergency medical procedures, and rescue operations.
  • Familiarity with fire codes, safety regulations, hazardous materials, and incident command.
  • Strong supervisory and personnel management skills, including conflict resolution and team building.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure, delegate effectively, and ensure scene safety.
  • Skilled in training development, public education, and professional representation of the department.
  • Proficient in preparing operational and incident reports and managing station-level resources.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Considerable experience as a firefighter/engineer.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

  • NC Class B CDL (non-commercial)
  • NC Firefighter Certification
  • NC EMT-Basic Certification
  • NC Fire Instructor II Certification
  • NC Fire Officer II Certification
  • NC Rescue Technician Certification
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May require exertion of up to 100 lbs and physical endurance for extended emergency operations.
  • Work occurs indoors and outdoors in extreme weather, hazardous environments, and tight spaces.
  • Frequent exposure to smoke, heat, chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens.
  • Use of personal protective equipment and respiratory gear is required.
