Job summary

Amarillo Fire Department seeks a Fire Mechanic I to perform skilled maintenance, repair, inspection, and diagnostics on fire department vehicles and equipment. Work under supervision, ensuring safe, reliable fleet operation per specifications and city standards.

Responsibilities include on-scene repairs, preventive maintenance, and accurate record-keeping. Requires two years auto/diesel experience, valid TX license, and readiness for CDL-A with X endorsement within 3 years.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; 2+ years auto/diesel experience.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License; ability to obtain Class-A CDL with X endorsement.
• Welding experience preferred; MVAC certification within 90 days; ASE and EVT-1 within 3 years.
• Must live within 30 minutes of Amarillo city limits; on-call 24/7.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on Amarillo Fire Department vehicles, fire apparatus, and related equipment.
• Diagnoses vehicle and equipment malfunctions using diagnostic equipment and testing tools.
• Repairs engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC, and related components.
• Performs on-scene repairs during emergencies and non-emergency situations as directed.
• Maintains documentation of work orders, inspections, and services for compliance.
• Coordinates repairs with supervisor and follows safety policies and procedures.
