Job summary

Thompson Safety is seeking a Fire Alarm Technician responsible for installation, testing, inspection, service, and repair of fire alarm systems. You will respond to emergencies, troubleshoot faulty devices, and restore panels to normal condition, while completing inspection and service reports.

The role requires traveling to customer sites for installations, service upgrades, and regular Life Safety System inspections.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity and ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Experience as Fire Alarm Technician preferred.
  • Willing to support training for entry-level candidates.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 72, NEC, and local fire codes preferred.
  • Proficient reading of blueprints and technical manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer locations to install, service, and upgrade fire alarm systems.
  • Respond to emergencies and after-hours safety issues.
  • Perform annual and semi-annual inspections of Life Safety Systems.
  • Provide inspection and service reports; note deficiencies or required corrections.
  • Troubleshoot faults and diagnose issues in fire alarm systems.
  • Coordinate with customers, contractors, and team members for installations and maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records of work and equipment inventory.
  • Provide technical support on system operation and maintenance.
  • Stay current with industry trends, codes, and technology.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions
  • Travel to customer locations to perform installation, service, and upgrades of fire alarm systems.
  • Respond to emergency situations during and after business hours to resolve safety concerns.
  • Perform Annual and Semi-annual inspection of Life Safety Systems.
  • Write and provide inspection/service reports on tested equipment and devices. Indicate any deficiencies or corrections that need to be made.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose faults or malfunctions in fire alarm systems and take appropriate actions.
  • Perform system upgrades, modifications, and expansions as necessary.
  • Collaborate with customers, contractors, and other team members to ensure efficient and effective installation and maintenance of fire alarm systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including service reports, inspection reports, and equipment inventory.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to customers regarding fire alarm systems, including system operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Stay current with industry trends, codes, regulations, and technological advancements related to fire alarm systems.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and practices, both for personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Additional technical certifications or training in fire alarm systems is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity and the ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Proven experience working as a Fire Alarm Technician is preferred.
  • Willing to support training/development for entry-level candidates. Technical aptitude preferred.
  • Solid Knowledge of fire alarm systems, including installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair is preferred.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, and standards, such as NFPA 72, NEC, and local fire codes is preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals is preferred.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with customers and team members.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Maintain a v alid driver's license and ability to pass a drug and background check.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear and have full use of hands. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to wor k from a ladder, and in some case, a man-lift.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and travel daily.
