Job summary

Summit Fire Protection in Kalamazoo, MI, is seeking a Fire Alarm Technician to install, troubleshoot, service and repair fire alarm systems and related life-safety products with minimal supervision.

You will work on-site, adhere to safety programs, document work orders, and participate in on-call rotations, with opportunities to train trainees and stay current with codes and standards.

Occasional travel up to 20% may be required as part of project coverage and client needs.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
• NICET or state specific certification, preferred.
• 2 years' Fire Life Safety Industry experience, specifically Fire Alarm, required.
• NICET Level 1 Fire Alarm Certification, strongly preferred.
• Must read, write and communicate in English.
• 2 years using business intelligence systems, Sage 300 CRE, or similar, preferred.
• 2 years of professional computer skills, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot fire alarm systems to determine faults, including ground faults.
• Repair or replace damaged fire alarm components such as FACP, power supplies, and initiating devices.
• Demonstrate knowledge of various manufacturers' clean agent and high‑pressure suppression systems.
• Use tools and test equipment to repair or replace fire alarm and suppression components.
• Maintain knowledge of fire alarm codes and standards.
• Apply programming and software skills across multiple fire alarm platforms when removing or replacing components.
• Follow safety procedures for handling explosive actuators such as squibs and gas cartridges.
• Communicate professionally with internal and external customers and offsite monitoring companies.
• Arrive punctually to assigned work locations and complete projects timely.
• Use Field Service Lightning to track work orders, materials, and time on the job.
• Complete all required documentation on work orders.
• Follow SFP's Safety Program, SDS Book, and Hazard Communication Program; participate in toolbox talks.
• Maintain companyprovided vehicle in clean and compliant condition.
• Participate in oncall rotation to support emergency service requests.
• Attend seminars and training to stay current with technology, codes, and standards.
• Train service technician trainees in applicable fire protection tasks.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of the Fire Alarm Technician position is to install, troubleshoot, service and repair fire alarm systems, and other fire and life safety products with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

• Troubleshoot fire alarm systems to determine faults, including ground faults.
• Repair or replace damaged fire alarm components such as FACP, power supplies, and alarminitiating devices.
• Demonstrate knowledge of various manufacturers' clean agent and highpressure suppression systems.
• Properly use tools and test equipment (e.g., multimeter, megger, programming laptop, lifts) to repair or replace fire alarm and suppression components.
• Maintain comprehensive working knowledge of fire alarm codes and standards.
• Apply programming and software skills across multiple fire alarm platforms when removing or replacing components.
• Safely follow procedures for handling, removing, and replacing explosive actuators such as squibs and gas cartridge actuators.
• Communicate professionally with internal and external customers and offsite monitoring companies.
• Arrive punctually to assigned work locations and complete scheduled projects in a timely manner.
• Use Field Service Lightning to track work orders, materials, and time on the job.
• Complete all required documentation on work orders.
• Understand and follow SFP's Safety Program, SDS Book, and Hazard Communication Program. Participate in weekly toolbox talks and maintain awareness of all safety documentation for each project.
• Maintain companyprovided vehicle in clean and compliant condition.
• Participate in oncall rotation as required to support emergency service requests.
• Attend periodic seminars and training sessions to stay current with technology, codes, and standards.
• Train service technician trainees in applicable fire protection tasks.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications listed below are representative of the elements required to perform the job successfully, however in some cases, an equivalent combination of Education, Training, Certifications and Experience may meet the job qualifications.

Education, Training, Certifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
• NICET or state specific certification, preferred.

Experience, Knowledge, Skill Requirements:

• 2 years' experience in Fire Life Safety Industry experience, specifically in Fire Alarm, required.
• NICET Level 1 Fire Alarm Certification, strongly preferred

Communication Skills:

• Must have the ability to effectively read, write and communicate in English with employees and customers.

Systems and Software Skills:

• 2 years using business intelligence systems, Sage 300 CRE, or similar, preferred.
• 2 years of professional computer skills, preferred

Other Qualifications:

• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
• Must be able to comply with SFP's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.
• Occasional travel up to 20%.
