Job Summary:
The Fire Alarm Inspector is responsible for performing inspection, testing, and documentation of fire alarm and integrated life-safety systems to ensure systems are operating properly and comply with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements. The Fire Alarm Inspector performs scheduled and periodic inspections, identifies deficiencies, prepares accurate inspection reports, communicates results to customers, and works closely with local leadership to support the timely correction of identified deficiencies.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform inspection and testing of commercial fire alarm and life-safety systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and company procedures.
- Conduct inspections in accordance with NFPA 72 and other applicable NFPA standards and local fire codes.
- Inspect and test fire alarm control panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, supervisory devices, monitoring equipment, batteries, power supplies, and associated system components.
- Test smoke detectors, heat detectors, duct detectors, manual pull stations, waterflow switches, tamper switches, notification appliances, and other initiating and signaling devices.
- Verify proper operation of fire alarm system functions and interfaces with other building systems where applicable.
- Identify system deficiencies, impairments, damaged equipment, missing components, and other conditions requiring corrective action.
- Accurately document inspection results and deficiencies using company-approved inspection forms and electronic reporting systems.
- Provide customers with clear explanations of inspection findings and recommended corrective actions.
- Perform minor approved corrective actions within the scope of training, certification, company policy, and applicable regulations.
- Complete inspection reports and required documentation in a timely manner.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, testing equipment, uniforms, and other assigned property.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including applicable OSHA requirements.
- Maintain a professional appearance and courteous customer-service approach at all times.
- Stay current with changes to fire alarm technology, applicable codes, NFPA standards, manufacturer requirements, and local AHJ requirements.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.
- Previous experience with fire alarm systems, electrical systems, fire protection, security systems, low-voltage systems, or a related field preferred.
- Ability to learn and apply applicable NFPA standards and local fire codes.
- Basic understanding of electrical and low-voltage systems.
- Ability to read system documentation, equipment labels, drawings, and technical information.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage a daily inspection schedule.
- NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems or related fire protection discipline.
- State or local fire alarm inspection certification or license, where required.
- Maintains a valid driver's license and ability to pass a drug screen and background check.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly utilizes a computer or tablet, telephone, and other office/shop equipment and may participate in virtual and in-person meetings.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, climbing, and working on your feet for extended periods, including up to eight hours per day.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs and access mechanical rooms, rooftops, fire pump rooms, and other equipment areas.
- Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials as required.Ability to work in commercial, industrial, construction, and other field environments.
- Ability to work in difficult-to-access areas when required.
- Ability to travel to customer locations and occasionally work outside normal business hours.
