Job summary

Chesapeake Fire Protection in Odenton, MD is hiring a Fire Alarm Design Engineer. This role focuses on designing fire alarm systems, preparing drawings, and coordinating with project teams in a primarily office-based setting.

The candidate should have 2–5 years of fire alarm design experience and a degree in Engineering/Drafting or equivalent experience, with proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit. Familiarity with NFPA codes and AHJ processes is required.

Qualifications

• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Drafting, or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
• 2–5 years of fire alarm design experience.
• Strong knowledge of NFPA codes and local fire alarm requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret construction documents and specifications.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design fire alarm systems per NFPA 72, NFPA 70, IBC, IFC and AHJ requirements.
• Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, riser diagrams, and device calculations.
• Select fire alarm equipment based on project scope and codes.
• Review architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings for proper coordination.
• Prepare submittal packages, including product data and sequences of operation.
• Support permitting and AHJ approval processes.
• Maintain organized project documentation.

What You’ll Do

• Design fire alarm systems in accordance with NFPA 72, NFPA 70 (NEC), IBC, IFC, and local AHJ requirements.


• Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, riser diagrams, and device calculations.


• Select fire alarm equipment and devices based on project scope and code requirements.


• Review architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings for proper coordination.


• Collaborate with Project Managers, engineers, and field personnel.


• Prepare submittal packages, including product data, battery calculations, and sequences of operation.


• Respond to plan review comments and revise drawings as needed.


• Support permitting and AHJ approval processes.


• Assist with design-build and value engineering solutions.


• Maintain organized project documentation and design files.


• Perform other duties as assigned.

What You Bring

• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Drafting, or related field, or equivalent industry experience.


• 2–5 years of fire alarm design experience.


• Strong knowledge of NFPA codes and local fire alarm requirements.


• Ability to read and interpret construction documents and specifications.


• Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit preferred.


• Familiarity with major fire alarm manufacturers and systems.


• NICET certification preferred.


• Microsoft Office proficiency, including Word and Excel.

The Job

• Primarily office and computer-based design work.


• Regularly required to sit, walk, and use hands for computer and technical work.


• Occasional reaching, standing, and ladder climbing may be required.
