Job summary

Matthews International is seeking a Finishing Operator on the 2nd shift (1:30 pm–10:00 pm, Mon–Fri with some Saturday overtime) to join our manufacturing team in Pittsburgh. This role blends hands-on finishing tasks with quality control to support a stable, long-term career in a safety‑first environment.

You’ll work across belting, chasing, coating, drilling, sandblasting, painting, packing and shipping, ensuring each piece meets specifications.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of finishing experience preferred.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office, Outlook & Internet applications.
  • Basic analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management, and planning skills.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships across the organization, and with internal and external clients.
  • Work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Influence peers and management.
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines, and reporting.
  • Mechanical aptitude; able to use hand tools, power tools, forklifts, welding equipment, and cutting torch.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Visually inspect product at workstation to determine required work.
  • Determine required finish operation based on production order and ticket.
  • Perform finish processes that meet quality standards.
  • Transfer product to and from workstation safely.
  • Observe safety precautions, rules, and regulations.
  • Belting: belt AIB, VA memorials, and regular memorials; change belts as needed and perform end-of-shift procedure.
  • Chasing: examine castings, chase needed areas, pound down welds, fill small holes, chase surface, letters, ribbons, emblems, vase holes edges, and ornamentation with appropriate tools.
  • Clear coating: operate clear booth controls, purge paint gun, and perform end-of-shift procedures.
  • Drilling and tapping of markers.
  • General cleaning: operate sand blaster and hand blaster.
  • Hand polishing: use air tools and perform end-of-shift procedures.
  • Oxidation: prepare castings, perform oxidation, apply basic techniques, and follow end-of-shift procedures.
  • Packing & shipping: conduct final quality inspection, then pack and ship castings.
  • Painting: operate sand blaster and hand blaster.
  • Handfinishing: work with a microscope, engrave, and sharpen rotary dies; inspect parts for incoming and outgoing quality control.
  • Maintain work area and all equipment needed to complete the job.
  • Assume additional duties as assigned.

What You’ll Do

The Finishing Operator performs a variety of functions under the finishing area, which includes belting, chasing, clear coating, drilling & tapping, sandblast operation, polisher operation, oxidation, packing & shipping, and painting. This position works to assure accuracy and quality control and promotes the flow of materials necessary to production.
