Job description

Home / Job / Finishing Journeyman/Stitch Operator

Set-ups, adjusts, operates and maintains machines that automatically cuts, folds, stitches, slits, perforates and/or scores printed sheets in preparation for binding or shipment. Ensures orderly and timely flow of materials throughout the process to meet customer specifications, in accordance with company policies and procedures. This position has the potential to turn into a lead position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Setting up, maintaining and repairing any machinery or equipment in the Finishing Department.
  • Review job specifications and plan work process to ensure meeting of customer specifications.
  • Pre-set side guide, fold plates, fold rollers, and any slitting blades or perforators required.
  • Load sheets onto feeder and jog sheets into proper positions.
  • Adjust machine during production run as required for adherence to all quality and customer requirements.
  • Ensure the completion of jobs meeting quality and quantity requirements.
  • May jog folded signatures or brochures for use in the next operation or for shipment to customer.
  • Examine cut material for any imperfections and adjust computer program as needed.
  • May operate two or more machines simultaneously.
  • Observes all safety rules and works in a safe manner.
  • Verifies size, color, and type of paper and color of ink from job order. Has good knowledge of product and materials used to produce product.
  • Completes and maintains all required paperwork accurately.
  • Perform daily cleaning of machine.
  • Completes repair of machines when needed.
  • Troubleshoot machine issues and problem solve as needed.
  • Reports any concerns to ensure that both technical and workflow issues are addressed and optimized.
  • Ensures equipment is optimized and operating within required standards in terms of process controls, planned maintenance schedules, make ready and running standards.
  • Running other bindery equipment such as paper drills, punches, laminators, coiling machines, and shrink-wrap machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

At least 10 or more years of running different bindery/finishing equipment.

Knowledge of how to run and maintain different folder, cutter and stitcher machines.

Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions and job jackets.
