GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A highly skilled position responsible for operating heavy public works finish construction equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The following principal functions describe the scope of responsibility but are not an all-inclusive list. Employees may perform other duties as assigned.

• Operate Motor Grader, Paving Machine, Gradall, or Trackhoe in finish grading capacity.
• Cut slopes and new grades with fine measurements and specifications.
• Fill holes and repair road shoulders.
• Perform ditching and other construction tasks using graders, Gradall excavators, and similar heavy equipment.
• Operate other equipment as needed.
• Perform mechanical and light maintenance on equipment.
• Act as crew leader on certain jobs and perform manual labor tasks as needed.
• Occasionally supervise crews at specific work stations.
• Maintain a professional and safe work area adhering to safety policies and organizational standards.
• Follow Board policies and procedures consistently.
• Respond productively to change and perform related tasks as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of finish equipment operation and traffic and highway safety rules.
• Knowledge of accident prevention measures and hazards related to heavy equipment.
• Skill in operating finish graders, excavators, pavers, Gradall, or similar heavy equipment.
• Ability to understand, follow, and issue oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with colleagues, supervisors, vendors, and the public.

PHYSICAL SKILLS:

Must remain stationary for 10% of the time. Frequently operate equipment, ascend/descend stairs and ladders, communicate with others, move materials up to 40 lbs, work outdoors in various weather conditions, operate vehicles/equipment, and inspect equipment and surroundings. Must have good vision and mobility over uneven surfaces. Continuous exposure to high noise levels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of heavy equipment operation experience in finish grading; or 8 years of similar experience.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: Valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License without restrictions.
