SALARY: $4,774 -$8,273 monthly depending on qualifications

SENATE PROFILE

The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually in the Capitol Building in Olympia beginning on the second Monday in January. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed. Permanent staff work year-round supporting the Senate and its legislative members. The Senate strives to cultivate an inclusive working environment that supports diversity through equitable policies and practices.

POSITION PROFILE

The Washington State Senate seeks a Financial Technician in the Accounting office. The ideal candidate will be skilled at detail-oriented work and open to learning new skills and processes. This position will ensure efficient, prompt, and accurate processing and distribution of incoming documents and imaging process document flow for personnel and payroll staff. The Senate Accounting office has a strong customer service focus, and this position will assist the office in providing a wide range of accounting services to elected Senate members and fellow employees of the Senate.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with answering general questions over the phone and electronic inquiries, track email messages, and contact staff regarding payroll & personnel paperwork.
  • Utilize Excel spreadsheets and Word processing software to create/update documents, forms, etc.
  • Navigate web-based applications to assist in various duties; duplicate and distribute materials such hiring packages, forms, paychecks, paystubs, etc.
  • File documents accurately, based upon established record keeping policies.
  • Compose and edit correspondence and documents.
  • Assist the Payroll Analyst with data entries and payroll activities into the State systems such as HRMS, Time Management, etc.
  • Review new and re-hire paperwork; create new folders for new members and employees; file and maintain payroll documents accordingly.
  • Assist with subscribing new and renewal subscriptions for the workgroups.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.
During Session:
  • Process payroll activities for Interns and Pages.
  • Track time sheets for session staff and follow-up with reminders.
During Interim:
  • Assist with subscriptions renewal to the workgroups
  • Reconcile the Senate’s credit card statements and complete the payment batches to the bank.
REQUIREMENTS

Diverse backgrounds in education and experience could be successful in this role and will be considered. However, demonstrated qualifications or experience in the following may be best suited for the position:

  • G.E.D. certificate or equivalent, college credits in accounting or related field.
  • One (1) year of general clerical or fiscal experience.
    • Knowledge of State of Washington payroll and accounting policies and regulations; principles and procedures of governmental accounting.
    • Communicate well and present oneself in a professional manner, excellent written and verbal skills.
    • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced office environment, independently and as a team.
    • Ability to work effectively and to build working relationships with a diverse population of
    • Senators, administrators, staff, and vendors while maintaining strict confidentiality.
    • Strong organization skills, especially prioritizing multiple tasks while accommodating numerous interruptions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and establish best business practices for financial and staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This position works in-person in Olympia during the legislative session. When the Legislature is not in session, in-state remote work is supported, except when needed to be in-person for training or legislative meetings.
  • Long and irregular hours are required during the legislative session, including evening and weekend work. When the Legislature is not in session, flexible schedule options are available.
  • This position is nonpartisan ,full-time, and exempt from civil service.
SALARY RANGE

RCW 49.58.110 requires employers to provide a full salary range in job postings. The salary range for this position is $4,774 - $8,273 monthly. The initial salary offered will consider internal equity and will be based on relevant knowledge, skills, and experience.
