About the Department

The Indiana Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) promotes growth and prosperity of local Indiana communities through effective and common-sense regulation. We regulate and supervise financial services providers to protect the interests of depositors, borrowers, shareholders, and consumers.

Role Overview

As an IT Examiner, you will assess whether financial institutions’ practices align with current industry best practices and determine the risk profile of each operating environment. You will focus on risk assessment, security, and compliance, and work with Department staff and examination staff from other regulatory agencies. You will complete required work programs, document the examination process, prepare examination report comments, and convey findings to financial institution management and Department staff. You will stay current on IT risks, threats, and industry best practices. You will report to the Field Manager. Travel within Indiana is required, with approximately 60% of examiner time onsite at institutions’ main offices.

Salary: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 and may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life

The essential functions include:

  • Compliance with the IT training program
  • Prepare for and analyze assigned areas using resource materials
  • Take an active role in training and report training needs to the supervisor
  • Provide timely information according to established policies and procedures
  • Seek and be open to feedback from all sources
  • Comply with training action plans, state and department policies
  • Understand and communicate state and departmental policies; escalate questions as needed
  • Perform examination activities as assigned
  • Use department-adopted procedures to identify and assess risk within a financial institution’s IT structure, including cyber security risk
  • Examine IT environments of low-to-moderate complexity (serviced institutions, in-house systems, small data centers)
  • Approach examinations with a tailored plan
  • Assess IT audit functions, delivery, and EFT with reduced supervision over time
  • Assess cybersecurity, IT management, development and acquisition, and information security standards; identify risks and develop supporting comments with supervision
  • Act as IT examiner-in-charge at smaller IT operations with minimal supervision
  • Communicate examination findings to IT and bank management with limited supervision
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of computer applications and use available technology to analyze financial institutions

What You'll Need for Success

Minimum qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have at least a bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university.

  • Ability to identify, apply, and interpret laws, regulations, and policies applicable to assigned areas, and to examine policies and procedures; willingness to research and assist examination staff
  • Understanding of IT infrastructures, current risks, and risk management practices; ability to engage with IT staff on network, hardware, software, vendor management, and risk practices
  • Familiarization with new laws, regulations, and examination procedures to assist examiners and supervisory personnel
  • Ability to evaluate financial data to measure performance and risk management
  • Ability to incorporate findings from management discussions to assess institutional performance

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
