Position Summary

The Financial Counselor assists patients and their families with a variety of services to ensure the payment process is fully explained and as comfortable as possible.

Responsibilities

  1. Understand the importance Orlando Health places on exemplary customer service and perform job functions to meet department goals.
  2. Maintain a positive and professional approach, communicating effectively with customers and team members.
  3. Gather and accurately input patient/guarantor demographic and financial information.
  4. Contact Primary Care or Admitting Physician to obtain necessary authorizations, diagnosis, and procedure details.
  5. Explain required forms and obtain signatures from patients/guarantors.
  6. Contact payers to verify benefits and obtain authorizations as needed.
  7. Explain insurance benefits and collect co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay amounts.
  8. Collect payments for related professional care when appropriate.
  9. Document authorization and benefit information in the registration system.
  10. Assemble patient records and obtain copies of relevant documents, including insurance cards, photo IDs, and advance directives.
  11. Demonstrate basic knowledge of third-party reimbursement requirements and regulations.
  12. Use registration systems, electronic verification tools, and web resources competently.
  13. Follow policies related to patient self-pay, including completing financial statements, explaining payment options, and collecting monies due.
  14. Adhere to cash handling policies and perform cashiering functions as needed.
  15. Collect and inventory patient valuables according to policy.
  16. Maintain an understanding of the medical necessity screening process and relevant systems.
  17. Perform pre-registration functions, including contacting physician offices, insurance payers, and patients/guarantors.
  18. Maintain departmental logs for statistical reporting.
  19. Meet Quality Assurance standards and departmental goals for collections, productivity, and customer service.
  20. Maintain flexible work schedule to meet departmental needs.
  21. Comply with federal, state, and hospital regulations.
  22. Maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with policies and standards.
  23. Adhere to all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  24. Participate in staff meetings and departmental initiatives.
  25. Review and follow all education and recertification requirements.
  26. Assist in planning and organizing departmental activities.

Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete Patient Financial Services Orientation and annual training.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in a financial, business, or customer service environment.
  • Proficiency in Windows Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Typing proficiency.
  • At least 1 year of PC/Windows experience.
