Job summary

UC San Diego Health is seeking a Financial Counselor to securely handle patient accounts, verify eligibility, and advise on financial options across UC San Diego Health facilities.

Under the direction of the Patient Access Manager, the role will collect deductibles, explain payment options, coordinate services with government programs, and maintain funding notes to support discharge planning across Hillcrest, La Jolla, and East Campus locations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years hospital registration/patient access experience in a large, complex healthcare environment.
  • Proven working knowledge of the patient referral and authorization process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook).
  • Requires good verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, multitasking and time management.
  • Requires interpersonal and work leadership skills to guide nonexempt personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Secure all accounts in accordance with the Medical Center's Financial Policy.
  • Assist patients with eligibility and benefits, and referrals to government programs.
  • Explain and coordinate payment options for collections; collect deductibles and patient liability.
  • Document status and fund notes; facilitate discharge by removing barriers to payment.

Under the direction of the Patient Access Manager, the Financial Counselor is responsible for financially securing all accounts; ensuring accounts are evaluated within the Medical Center's Financial Policy; serving as financial resource to patient care team, staff, vendors, patients and their families regarding financial issues and/or referral to government programs; obtaining eligibility and benefit information, authorizations, patient demographic information; collecting deductibles and patient liability; presenting and explaining payment options for collections of monies due; coordinating facilitation by pursuing eligibility and benefits for services rendered which are determined to be necessary in the continuum of care; and keeping team informed of the status of the account by openly communicating and participating in removing barriers to discharge and on-line documentation in funding notes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of three (3) years previous Hospital Registration, Patient Access experience in a large, complex healthcare environment.
  • Proven working knowledge of the patient referral and authorization process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook).
  • Requires good verbal and written communication skills, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
  • Requires interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other nonexempt personnel.
  • Possess the personal characteristics of professionalism, credibility, commitment to high standards, innovation, and accountability.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Covered California Certified Enrollment Counselor.
  • Certified Revenue Cycle Representative.
  • Bilingual skills fluently in Spanish/English verbally and written.
  • Thorough knowledge of third party payors and reimbursement requirements, medical terminology, ICD-9, and CPT codes.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $64,498 - $92,436 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.89 - $44.27

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
