Financial Controller - Heavy Marine & Civil Construction
A well-established and growing heavy marine and civil construction company is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and internal controls across the organization. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will play a critical role in supporting operational decision-making, improving profitability, and helping guide the company through continued growth.
The Financial Controller will oversee the accounting team and partner closely with project managers, operations leadership, executive leadership, auditors, tax specialists, and banking partners. This role is ideal for a finance leader with experience in heavy civil construction, marine construction, infrastructure, or other project-based industries who understands job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, equipment costs, and project profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting and financial operations, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and internal controls.
- Manage project accounting functions for heavy marine and civil construction operations, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, revenue recognition, and project profitability reporting.
- Lead the development of annual operating and capital budgets, including financial analysis and reporting.
- Review financial projections compared to actual results and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools to support executive decision-making.
- Ensure effective cash flow management, including oversight of billing, collections, and accounts receivable.
- Partner with project managers and operations teams to analyze project performance and improve margins.
- Oversee equipment accounting, fixed assets, fleet cost allocations, and utilization reporting.
- Support executive leadership in evaluating capital expenditures, acquisitions, and strategic growth opportunities.
- Manage relationships with independent auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory and tax requirements.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance personnel.
- Establish and implement best-in-class accounting practices throughout the organization.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of accounting or finance experience.
- 3+ years of accounting leadership or management experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA required.
- Experience with heavy civil construction, marine construction, infrastructure, roadway, bridge, utility, or similar project-based industries preferred.
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project forecasting.
- Experience with equipment accounting and fleet cost management preferred.
- Familiarity with Viewpoint Vista or similar construction accounting systems preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, operations, and executive leadership.
