Hybrid This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the Global Technical Center - Knudsen Pre-Production Operations Warren MI three times per week, or as dictated by the business needs.

GMD Controllership’s mission is to serve as a Strategic Business Partner, providing timely and insightful decisions on matters related to disclosure requirements, accounting, audit/SOX compliance, and financial analyses. We leverage financial systems to increase visibility, improve efficiency, shorten decision cycles, and reinforce financial integrity and accountability.

Ideal candidates are dynamic accounting professionals eager to learn, grow, and develop expertise across various Controllership functions at General Motors.

The primary responsibilities include supporting financial reporting and government accounting processes, systems, and controls for GM’s governmental contracting business unit, GM Defense. This requires understanding internal and external reporting requirements and accounting activities related to Government contracting. The role also involves designing, testing, and implementing business processes to improve clarity, efficiency, and financial integrity.

This position requires either a U.S. Person (as defined in export regulations) or a non-U.S. Person eligible for export authorization(s). DoD Security Clearance may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of GM Defense’s processes and systems to identify control gaps and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Apply and operationalize accounting and financial reporting standards (GAAP), SEC rules, and government accounting regulations (CAS, FAR/DFARS).
  • Evaluate current accounting practices, focusing on continuous improvement and optimization.
  • Identify and analyze potential accounting risks and issues.
  • Research the accounting implications of transactions and contracts, ensuring compliance with SOX, CAS, and FAR/DFARS.
  • Implement internal controls, SOX compliance, and financial procedures.
  • Ensure financial reporting accuracy, timeliness, and conformity with GAAP.
  • Support the design, testing, and implementation of accounting processes, systems, and controls for GM Defense.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, mathematics, business administration, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in accounting or finance.
  • Ability to work independently with judgment and initiative, and to quickly assimilate new work.
  • Understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Willingness to learn new technical skills and take on additional responsibilities.
  • Ability to collaborate across business, IT, and data analysis teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with fixed-price, T&M, or cost-plus contracts.
  • CPA or CA certification.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience with SAP for government contracts.
  • Knowledge of government contract accounting, CAS, and FAR/DFARS.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, project management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Interest in data systems and automation.
