Job summary

West Fraser in Cordova, TN is seeking a proactive Capital Planning Analyst to support project portfolios, budgets, forecasts, and reporting. You will partner with operations leaders and project teams to drive cost control, data integrity, and BI-driven insights.

The role emphasizes continuous improvement, automation, and timely management reporting. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s in finance or related field and 3+ years of financial analysis, with strong Excel, Power BI, and ERP

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in financial analysis, capital planning, project controls, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial processes, internal controls, and capital investment analysis.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements, automation opportunities, and reporting enhancements.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with mill operations leaders to manage capital project portfolios and provide visibility into project status, risks, and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with project managers, procurement, construction, engineering, and planning teams to monitor progress, costs, forecasts, and scope changes.
  • Analyze capital spending performance, budget-to-forecast variances, and key cost drivers; communicate trends and recommendations to leadership.
  • Develop and enhance reporting processes; create dashboards and BI solutions (Power BI or similar).
  • Drive reporting process improvements through automation and scalable solutions.
  • Produce monthly capital reporting packages including project analysis, KPI reporting, and management presentations.
  • Support capital project evaluation, budgeting, forecasting, and payback analyses.

Description

We are looking for a self-starter, creative problem solver, and strong communicator who thrives on new challenges and has an achievement-oriented mindset. You will play a key role in supporting capital planning and investment decisions while driving continuous improvement, reporting innovation, and process efficiencies across the organization.

What You Will Do

  • Partner with mill operations leaders to manage capital project portfolios, maintain project data integrity, and provide ongoing visibility into project status, risks, and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with project managers, procurement, construction, engineering, and planning teams to monitor project progress, actual costs, forecasts, and scope changes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Analyze capital spending performance, budget-to-forecast variances, and key cost drivers. Communicate trends, risks, and recommendations to operations leadership, project teams, and finance stakeholders.
  • Develop and enhance reporting processes that provide meaningful insights into capital project performance and portfolio management. Candidates with experience creating dashboards, automating reporting, and delivering business intelligence solutions through Power BI or similar tools will have the opportunity to help shape and expand our reporting capabilities.
  • Drive reporting process improvements through automation, data analysis, and the implementation of scalable solutions that improve efficiency and support decision-making.
  • Partner with stakeholders to identify reporting needs, translate business requirements into meaningful analytics, and continuously improve reporting capabilities and user experience.
  • Produce monthly capital reporting packages, including major project analysis, executive summaries, KPI reporting, and management presentations.
  • Support capital project evaluation, business case development, budgeting, forecasting, and payback analyses to support investment decisions.
  • Facilitate post-implementation reviews to evaluate project effectiveness, measure expected returns, and capture lessons learned.
  • Serve as the Smartsheet Subject Matter Expert, supporting project tracking, workflow optimization, and process standardization initiatives.
  • Provide guidance on capital versus expense classifications and ensure compliance with accounting policies and internal controls.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the Approved for Expenditure (AFE) process, documentation, and governance requirements.
  • Support month-end close activities by partnering with Accounting and Finance teams to ensure accurate and timely project-related accounting and reporting.
  • Support the development of long-range capital plans through data analysis, scenario modeling, and collaboration with operational leaders.
  • Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives that enhance reporting, planning, forecasting, and capital management processes.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.

What Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in financial analysis, capital planning, project controls, project accounting, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial processes, internal controls, and capital investment analysis.
  • Strong skills in the use of and ability to learn technologies and tools related to finance, project management, reporting, and analytics.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements, automation opportunities, and reporting enhancements is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with the ability to translate complex data into meaningful business insights.
  • Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and drive initiatives with limited direction.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present findings and recommendations to leadership.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Oracle EBS, Smartsheet, enterprise project management systems, and business intelligence/reporting tools such as Power BI
