Senior Financial Planner - $100k-$120k base + uncapped performance incentives
About the job
This is a role that Forgent is a specialty recruiting platform designed for financial services professionals. This is a role we are recruiting for on behalf of our client, a premier independent wealth management firm in New Haven, CT.
Company Description
Our client is a high-touch independent RIA managing approximately $600 million in assets under management across just 125 client relationships. That ratio is rare in the industry and it reflects everything about how this firm operates: deep relationships, rigorous planning, and a genuine commitment to doing right by every client.
Job Description
This is a ground-floor opportunity to help shape the next chapter of a firm that has already built something exceptional. You will deliver comprehensive financial plans, manage meaningful client relationships, and play a real role in growing the business. The team is small, the standards are high, and the upside for someone who wants to build is significant. If you have been looking for a place where your experience matters and your initiative gets rewarded, this is worth a conversation.
Why this role is remarkable
- You are joining a $600M AUM firm with only 125 clients. Every relationship here is substantive. This is not a volume shop where you are churning through plans. You will do the kind of work that got you into this profession in the first place.
- The compensation structure is built for builders. A competitive base salary is complemented by a 25% performance bonus, and once you reach $300K in managed revenue, that converts to 10% of ongoing revenue with no cap. Refer and land a new client and you earn up to 40% of that first-year revenue.
- The firm is in an exciting growth phase with a founder who has set ambitious, public goals for scaling the business. You are not joining to maintain. You are joining to help build something you will look back on with pride.
- There is a clear, transparent path from Senior Financial Planner to Wealth Manager, tied directly to your results. No ambiguity, no waiting for someone to retire. Hit your milestones and you move up.
- You will not start from zero. Existing client relationships will transition to you over time, giving you a foundation while you build your own clients with help from the team.
What You Will Do
- Create and present comprehensive financial plans independently while managing a growing roster of client relationships.
- Serve as both first and second chair on client engagements, stepping into lead roles as the firm strategically transitions relationships from the founder's book.
- Drive business development activity: attend organized networking events, build referral relationships with centers of influence, and bring fresh thinking to how the firm grows its presence in the community.
- Act as a thought partner on growth strategy. The firm has strong infrastructure and processes in place, and they are looking for someone who can help take the commercial side to the next level.
- Collaborate closely with a tight-knit team that values transparency, high standards, and collective accountability.
The ideal candidate
- 3 to 7 years of financial planning experience with direct client-facing work. You have built plans, presented them, and managed ongoing relationships. You know what good looks like.
- CFP designation preferred. If you do not have it yet, you are actively working toward it. Series 65 required within four months of hire.
- A genuine appetite for business development. You are energized by the idea of getting the firm's name out into the community and building your own book, not just waiting for clients to be assigned to you.
- Comfortable in a high-accountability, process-driven environment where feedback is frequent and direct. The culture here values people who can absorb input, focus on what is best for the client, and keep moving forward without taking things personally.
- The kind of person who wants to be part of building something. You are drawn to a firm that is growing, not coasting, and you want to look back in five years knowing you helped get it there.
- Advisors currently in broker-dealer networks who want to make the leap to fully fee-based planning at an independent firm are especially encouraged to apply. Your experience translates well here, and this could be the move you have been thinking about.
