Job description

Program Director at Shared Financial Services

Shared Financial Services (SFS) strengthens small and midsized nonprofits by giving them the tools to build financial literacy, make data-informed decisions, and clearly communicate their financial story.

We are guided by the values of equity, efficiency, transparency, integrity, and affordability.

SFS is a fiscally sponsored program of New Sun Rising and a program of Elevate NP of Southwestern Pennsylvania, a regional capacity-building initiative working with nonprofits, funders, and partners to expand access to knowledge, build networks, and increase community impact.

At SFS, you’ll work alongside passionate professionals who bring rigor, empathy, and approachability to nonprofit finance. Together, we help organizations build strong systems, sustain impact, and use their financial data to generate resources and drive strategy.

In This Role, You Will
  • Guide Monthly Close & Reconciliations: Manage accurate and timely reconciliations of all financial accounts, update schedules, and maintain consistent monthly close processes that ensure audit readiness and transparency.
  • Lead Client Financial Operations: Oversee all day-to-day accounting activity and ensure ledger integrity across a portfolio of nonprofit clients, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll entries, and journal transactions. Lead client meetings.
  • Steward Grant & Restricted Funds: Track restricted grants, prepare releases, and maintain clear documentation to ensure compliance with donor restrictions and funding requirements.
  • Develop & Communicate Financial Reports: Prepare monthly financial reporting packages (P&L, balance sheet, restricted fund schedules) and provide clear, actionable commentary to client leadership.
  • Support Strategic Decision-Making: Partner with the CFO and client executives on budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning, providing data that supports their work.
  • Mentor & Coordinate Teams: Develop Finance Associates, maintain consistency in internal workflows, and build scalable procedures that balance efficiency and quality.
  • Advance Systems & Process Improvement: Leverage tools such as QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Excel, and Keeper to streamline workflows and ensure data integrity.
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).

Experience: 3–7 years of nonprofit accounting, audit, or financial management experience, ideally in multi-entity or client-service settings.

Technical Proficiency
  • QuickBooks Online (advanced functionality)
  • Bill.com or similar AP automation tools
  • Familiarity with Keeper, Asana, or other workflow tools preferred
Knowledge
  • Nonprofit GAAP and restricted fund accounting
  • Grant reporting and audit preparation standards
Core Competencies
  • Strong analytical and communication skills; able to translate complex data for non-financial audiences
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities across clients
  • Detail-oriented with a process-improvement mindset
  • Service-oriented, proactive, and collaborative
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience supporting nonprofits in multi-fund or grant-heavy environments
  • Exposure to shared services or outsourced finance structures
  • Prior experience mentoring junior accountants or bookkeepers
  • Passion for capacity-building and strengthening nonprofit infrastructure
  • Salary range: $70,000 – $80,000
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Long-term disability coverage
  • SIMPLE IRA with employer match
  • Paid time off
Why Join SFS

At Shared Financial Services, we believe that financial clarity is a form of service. Our work helps small and midsize nonprofit leaders make informed, ethical, and sustainable decisions that strengthen communities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.

You will join a collaborative, growth-oriented team that values curiosity, accountability, and precision. The systems you build and the clients you onboard are vital contributions towards our vision of strengthening the sector regionally, ensuring that more nonprofits can make confident, informed decisions rooted in financial integrity.
