Job summary

The City of Lake Forest seeks an Assistant Finance Director to lead the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department, supervise six staff, and drive process improvements, audit coordination, and annual budget development.

The role requires five years of municipal accounting experience with supervisory responsibilities, strong GAAP knowledge, advanced Excel skills, and familiarity with BS&A software; MBA or CPA is desirable and opportunity to act as Finance Director when needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field; MBA or CPA desirable.
• Minimum of five years of progressive municipal accounting experience, including at least two years supervising professional staff.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and governmental accounting practices.
• Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft 365.
• Experience with BS&A software is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, develop, and evaluate a six-person team; set goals and conduct performance reviews.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, and staff development; ensure backups and cross-training.
• Steer department projects from scoping to implementation, improving cash handling and purchasing.
• Strengthen internal controls and manage financial system access and security.
• Coordinate annual audit, liaise with auditors, and prepare ACFR and GFOA submissions.
• Support annual operating budget development and long-range financial forecasting.
• Prepare Tax Levy and Appropriation Ordinances; coordinate with School District 67.
• Oversee grant programs with the City’s consultant.
