Job summary

Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is seeking a Finance Intern for the Montgomery County Planning Department in Wheaton, MD. The role targets undergrad or grad students with interest in accounting, finance, or business and offers meaningful exposure to budget development and analysis.

Interns will support monthly projections, PO analysis, and journal entries while leveraging advanced Excel skills and MS Office tools.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in a college/university at undergrad or grad level and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
• Intern I: pursuing associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business.
• Intern II: already earned a bachelor’s degree and is enrolled in a master’s program in accounting, finance, or business.
• Proficiency with Excel and MS Office applications including Teams, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with budget development and execution.
• Assist with monthly projections analysis (update payroll and non-personnel expense spreadsheets).
• Track purchases and ensure proper coding to accounting units.
• Review Xerox and cell phone charges for correct recording.
• Prepare budget templates and expenditure journal entries.
• Prepare budget adjustment journal entries and PO liquidation requests.
• Update monthly fund reports and maintain budget documents in Teams.
• Work with semi-complex Excel spreadsheets and ad hoc reports.

Internship Dates & Additional Information

• The internship will run during the 2026-2027 school year.
• The projected pay for this position is from $20.50 per hour to $23.50 per hour depending on level and qualifications.
• Expected to work between 12 to 20 hours per week.

Examples of Important Duties

• Assist with budget development and execution
• Assist with the monthly projections analysis:
  • Update spreadsheets with bi-weekly payroll expenses
  • Update spreadsheets with monthly non-personnel expenses
  • Purchase Order analysis
• Track Purchase Card and Petty Cash purchases to ensure costs are coded to the correct accounting unit and account code
• Review the Xerox charges and confirm that the charges are recorded correctly
• Analyze the cell phone bill and confirm that the charges are recorded correctly
• Assist with the preparation of various budget templates
• Prepare expenditure journal entries
• Prepare budget adjustment journal entries
• Prepare purchase order liquidation requests
• Update monthly Fund reports (SRF, ISF)
• Assist in maintaining the Teams Channels for budget related documents
• Work on semi-complex Excel spreadsheets
• Ad hoc reports

Minimum Qualifications

Students must currently be enrolled at a college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level and must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Intern I

Currently enrolled in college pursuing either an associate or bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or business.

Intern II

Student who has received a bachelor's degree and accepted or enrolled in a master's degree program pursuing a degree in accounting, finance, or business.

In addition to the minimum qualifications listed above, the selected intern should have the following:

• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications including Teams, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Health Insurance Plans

You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
