Job summary

Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking an undergraduate or graduate Finance Intern with interests in accounting, finance, and business. The internship runs during the 2026-2027 school year, offering pay from $20.50 to $23.50 per hour and an expected 12–20 hours per week.

Location is downtown Wheaton, MD with commuter reimbursement. Responsibilities include budget development, projections analysis, and preparing various budget templates and journal entries.

Qualifications

• Student must be enrolled in college/university at undergraduate or graduate level with a minimum 2.5 GPA (4.0 scale).
• Intern I: pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business.
• Intern II: bachelor's degree and enrolled in a master's program in accounting, finance, or business.
• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with budget development and execution.
• Assist with monthly projections analysis, including updating bi-weekly payroll expenses and monthly non-personnel expenses.
• Perform Purchase Order analysis and track purchases to ensure proper coding.
• Review Xerox charges, cell phone bills, and ensure correct recording.
• Prepare expenditure journal entries, budget adjustment journal entries, and PO liquidation requests.
• Update monthly Fund reports and assist in maintaining budget-related Teams channels.
• Work on semi-complex Excel spreadsheets and ad hoc reports.

The Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking a highly motivated undergraduate or graduate Finance Intern with an interest and anticipated careers in the following areas:

The Montgomery County Planning Department is part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a nearly 100-year-old, nationally recognized organization serving the vibrant and culturally diverse populations of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties on the border of Washington, D.C. Internship Dates & Additional Information

• The internship will run during the 2026-2027 school year.


• The projected pay for this position is from $20.50 per hour to $23.50 per hour depending on level and qualifications.


• Expected to work between 12 to 20 hours per week.

• Assist with budget development and execution

• Analyze the cell phone bill and confirm that the charges are recorded correctly


• Assist with the preparation of various budget templates


• Prepare expenditure journal entries


• Prepare budget adjustment journal entries


• Prepare purchase order liquidation requests


• Update monthly Fund reports (SRF, ISF)


• Assist in maintaining the Teams Channels for budget related documents


• Work on semi-complex Excel spreadsheets


• Ad hoc reports

Minimum Qualifications

Students must currently be enrolled at a college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level and must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Intern I

Currently enrolled in college pursuing either an associate or bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or business.

Intern II

Student who has received a bachelor's degree and accepted or enrolled in a master's degree program pursuing a degree in accounting, finance, or business.

In addition to the minimum qualifications listed above, the selected intern should have the following:

• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications including Teams, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint


• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills


• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills


• Strong written and verbal communication skills
