Job summary

University of Georgia is seeking a Veterinary Assistant I for its Large Animal Hospital in the Athens area. The role involves safely handling and restraining large animals, primarily horses and cows, for exams, procedures, and diagnostics, while supporting clinicians and students in patient care and related tasks.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and prefers candidates with experience in large animal handling, veterinary terminology, and anatomy.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience working with large animals, primarily horses, but including cows, pigs, and camelids.
  • Knowledge of veterinary terminology and animal anatomy and behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Handling/restraint of large animals (primarily horses/cows, may include sheep, pigs, goats, camelids).
  • Assist with lameness exams (jogging/lunging), procedures, standing surgeries, radiology/bone scans, neuro exams and stallion collection.
  • Assist LVTs/Clinicians/Students/Client Support Coordinator in patient care, housekeeping/stocking/stall maintenance, animal/sample transport, anesthetic induction/recovery, Vetview/Cubex usage.
  • Training and working in other areas of large animal and field services
