Qualifications

Job description

Primary Purpose:

Provide safe and efficient transportation service so that students may enjoy the greatest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular programs.

Qualifications:

Education/Certifications:

Must be 21 years of age

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B with S and P endorsements)

Must pass DOT physicals and alcohol/drug tests

Acceptable driving record in accordance with DPS standards

Acceptable criminal history record

Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate or a valid Enrollment Certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively

Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior

Ability to safely operate bus

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Vehicle Operation

  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules, following procedures when changes are necessary.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures promptly and accurately.
  • Keep records on bus mileage, number of passengers transported, and other reports as required by supervisors.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

Student Management

  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems per department guidelines.

Safety

  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Perform pre- and post- trip inspections as required, checking bus for mechanical defects and following proper procedures to report needed repairs.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
  • Participate in emergency drills as required.

Personal Effectiveness

  • Positive Attitude: Present a positive role model for patrons and students, supporting the goals of the GCISD.
  • Cooperation: Work effectively with others, providing assistance and support to co-workers.
  • Dependability: Report to work on time, be reliable for regular and overtime work, and be absent only with good cause.
  • Judgment: Exhibit good judgment in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Initiative: Recognize needs of job and suggest ways to improve efficiency, productivity, and safety

Other

  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to procedures in Transportation Operations Manual.

  • Participate in meetings and training sessions as designed by District staff
  • Regular and consistent attendance
  • All other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stressful conditions; Prolonged sitting, reaching, twisting, walking, high steps, and repetitive hand/arm motions; Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes; Ability to lift or drag 25-40 pounds in an emergency. Demonstrate patience and flexibility in changing job demands and when interacting with employees, visitors, and the public.
