Job summary

Pacific Backflow in Oceanside, CA seeks a Field Technician Trainee to learn testing, repair and installation of backflow assemblies under a senior tech. You will perform activities that prepare you for certification and later on-call work, with training focused on safety and customer service.

Eligible candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, a valid California driver's license, and a willingness to obtain backflow tester certification within 90 days. Growth opportunities offered.

Field Technician Trainee

Following instructions is a must. Some understanding of other trades is helpful but not required. The job involves lifting, kneeling, squatting and working in difficult terrain, as well as the agility needed to work in awkward physical positions as part of the job.

Backflow Field Technician Trainee Job Description

The Backflow Field Technician Trainee, under the guidance of a Senior Field Technician, will be trained in testing, repair, replacement and installation of backflow prevention assemblies sized from 1/2" pipe diameter through 12" pipe diameter and in related tasks and duties. This work can be physically intensive, performed in all seasons and weather conditions, during daytime and nighttime hours and upon rough and uneven terrain. After becoming aField Technician, the employee is available for after-hours and weekend on-call service on a rotating basis.

The training, and the Trainee’s tasks and duties, include but are not limited to:

Testing backflow prevention assemblies according to the required procedure using proper tools, gauge and other equipment.

Diagnosis and repair of backflow prevention assemblies according to procedure and best practices using hand tools, pipe wrenches, power tools, lubricants and other equipment as necessary.

Review of daily job schedule, instructions and specifications to determine work details and procedures.

Travel to assigned job locations, of which there may be many throughout each day, to perform necessary work.

Safely operate a motor vehicle in all weather and traffic conditions.

Properly complete backflow test report forms according to water district requirements. Produce detailed work reports.

Communicate with operations staff and front office by phone, email, SMS, forms and other appropriate methods.

Excavate installation areas (primarily with hand tools), observe evolving job conditions, understand existing plumbing to establish the sequence of pipe installations. Assemble pipe sections and fittings, using plastic solvent, soldering, or pressing equipment. Connect to existing above ground and underground water piping systems and extend piping to connect backflow prevention assemblies and plumbing to these systems. Measure, cut, and thread pipe, using hand and power tools or machines such as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, and pipe-bending machines. Install theft deterrent devices including cages, valve guards, chains, locks, etc. Work with concrete and wood and other materials to achieve the end result promised to the customer. Remove and properly dispose of debris.

Safely lift and carry bulky items weighing up to and in excess of 100 pounds. Understand and implement team lift concepts when appropriate.

Monitor and maintain tools and inventory on service vehicle to ensure operational consistency.

Other duties as assigned and as needed to accomplish mission.

Trainee is expected to have a current Backflow Tester Certification or obtainCertificationthrough a recognized agency during the first 90 days of Training. It is understood by the Trainee that Field Technicians are available for after-hours and weekend on-call service requests on a rotating basis according to schedule as determined by the Operations Manager. Trainee agrees to be available for after-hours and weekend on-call service requests upon successful completion of Training and throughout tenure of employment.
