Job summary

Network Connex Company is seeking a Field Technician (L2) to perform installation and cabling services in live, mission-critical data center environments. You will work independently, route and test copper and fiber, and mentor L1 technicians while supporting QA/QC processes.

Travel to regional data center sites may be required; standard safety procedures apply. The role requires strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred.
  • 3+ years in data center, cabling, or field service.
  • Fiber optic testing certification on OTDR/OLTS.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean record.

Responsibilities

  • Install and cabling services per agreements, following safety and QA/QC standards.
  • Route, terminate, label, and test copper and fiber cabling.
  • Read cable maps, schematics, and floor plans to guide work.
  • Maintain accurate service reports and asset tracking.
  • Work in live data center environments and meet project milestones.
  • Mentor L1 technicians and travel to regional sites as needed.

Position Overview

The Field Technician (L2) executes installation services as defined under applicable agreements and performs work to required technical, quality, and safety standards. This role independently performs installation and cabling services in live, mission-critical data center environments with little to no guidance from lead technicians. The Field Technician (L2) supports quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) processes and provides mentorship to L1 Field Trainee Technicians. Fieldwork may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and off-hours. Travel may be required based on business needs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Execute installation services as defined under contractual agreements, ensuring compliance with all technical, safety, QA, and QC standards
  • Perform all installation and cabling services required for the role without supervision, including routing, terminating, labeling, and testing copper and fiber optic cabling
  • Establish scope, work plans, and procedures with minimal guidance from lead technicians
  • Perform rack and stack operations, patch panel installations, cable dressing, and structured cabling to maintain clean, organized, and high-performing systems
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and restore complex, multi-domain failures across fiber optic and twisted pair systems, including loss of signal, low signal, and interface errors
  • Diagnose physical connectivity issues, hardware failures, and support break/fix activities; identify and resolve issues independently without escalation
  • Read and interpret cable maps, schematics, and floor layouts to support installation and troubleshooting activities
  • Maintain accurate documentation, asset tracking, and service reports for all assigned work
  • Support QA and QC requirements for assigned projects and installations
  • Work effectively in live, operational, mission-critical data center environments
  • Coordinate with engineers, vendors, and internal teams to ensure project milestones and quality standards are met
  • Follow all data center safety, security, and change management procedures
  • Train and mentor L1 Field Trainee Technicians, supporting their development and adherence to standards
  • Respond to onsite service requests and travel to regional data center sites as needed
Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills across fiber optic and copper cabling systems
  • Familiarity with PON or point-to-multipoint network deployments utilizing simplex fiber and non-standard wavelengths
  • Proficiency in fiber optic testing using OTDR and OLTS equipment
  • Certified in fiber splicing techniques and best practices
  • Strong understanding of structured cabling systems, testing methodologies, and documentation requirements
  • Knowledge of cabling standards including Cat5e, Cat6/6A, single-mode, and multi-mode fiber
  • Working knowledge of server hardware, network devices, and basic networking concepts
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to operate independently while maintaining quality, safety, and customer standards
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or associate’s degree preferred
  • 3 or more years of documented industry experience in data center, structured cabling, or field service environments
  • Documented fiber optic testing certification on OTDR and OLTS
  • Experience performing work in operational environments and on projects within live mission-critical data centers
  • Possession of all relevant certifications required for the role
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
Preferred Qualifications
  • BICSI, CompTIA A+, Network+, CCNA, or similar industry certifications
  • Experience supporting enterprise hardware platforms (e.g., Dell, HPE, Cisco)
  • Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote support tools, and project management workflows
  • Experience working in enterprise or hyperscale data center environments
  • Fiber splicing certification
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at various heights as required by the facility.
